Chapter 8 - THE FINAL CONFESSION

The investigation finally uncovered the missing piece.
She didn't come alone.
Two lawyers waited downstairs.
Maya opened the door but didn't invite her in.
"Why are you here?"
Victoria looked exhausted.
"I need to talk to you."
"About my father?"
Victoria's expression changed.
That was all Maya needed.
"You knew."
Victoria swallowed.
"I knew the name."
"You knew who he was."
"I didn't know you were his daughter."
Maya stared at her.
"Then why did you react when Colonel Vance mentioned him?"
Victoria remained silent.
Maya's anger rose.
"You humiliated me for years."
"I know."
"You called me worthless."
"I was wrong."
"You treated me like I was lucky to be married to Daniel."
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"I believed you were nobody."
Maya's voice became quiet.
"That's exactly why I was useful."
Victoria looked at her.
"What?"
"You never investigated me."
Maya stepped closer.
"You didn't think a nobody could be dangerous."
Victoria looked away.
For the first time, Maya realized something.
