Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN THEY HUMILIATED

Maya had spent twenty-four years believing she was nobody.
She had no famous family name, no inheritance, no childhood photographs, and no memories of the people who had brought her into the world.
She had grown up moving from one foster home to another, learning very young that asking questions about her parents usually brought silence.
So when she married Daniel Sterling, she believed she had finally found a family.
She was wrong.
Daniel's mother, Victoria Sterling, never accepted her.
To Victoria, Maya was an embarrassment.
She had no prestigious education, no wealthy relatives, and no family connections.
At a formal dinner celebrating the proposed Sterling-Vaughn merger, Victoria finally stopped pretending.
She looked Maya up and down and smiled coldly.
"Some people should be grateful simply to have been invited."
The table became silent.
Maya knew exactly what she meant.
Her husband lowered his eyes.
He didn't defend her.
Victoria continued.
"Daniel could have married someone from a respectable family."
Maya swallowed her humiliation.
She had heard similar comments for years.
But that night, something inside her finally broke.
She stood.
"You're right."
Victoria raised an eyebrow.
Maya removed her wedding ring and placed it on the table.
"I should stop begging people to accept me."
Daniel looked up.
"Maya..."
She turned toward him.
"I won't be your family's burden anymore."
Then she walked away.
She didn't know that someone had been watching the entire confrontation from across the room.
A military officer in a dark uniform.
Colonel Vance.
He had come to the event for reasons completely unrelated to the Sterling family.
But the moment he saw Maya's face, he froze.
There was something about her.
The eyes.
The jawline.
The expression.
He quietly took out his phone.
"Send me the photograph from the security cameras."
Minutes later, an image appeared on his screen.
Vance stared at it.
May you like
Then he whispered a name he hadn't spoken in twenty-four years.
"Alexander."
