Chapter 9 - War of the Lawyers

Two weeks after the catastrophic wedding, the battleground shifted from the romantic garden terrace to the sterile, fluorescent-lit legal deposition rooms of Manhattan’s Federal District Court.
Evelyn sat at a long polished conference table, flanked by Aunt Valerie and Arthur Vance. Across from them sat a panel of four high-priced, aggressive corporate defense attorneys hired by Thomas’s wealthy relatives in a desperate attempt to salvage his freedom.
Thomas sat in the middle of his legal team, wearing a plain gray suit provided by the detention center. The slick, arrogant titan was gone. His eyes were sunken, his hair unkempt, his hands trembling slightly whenever he reached for his glass of water.
"Mrs. Sterling," began Thomas’s lead attorney, a razor-sharp litigator named Harrison Croft. "We are prepared to offer a comprehensive civil settlement. Mr. Sterling will relinquish all claims to the physical estate and agree to a quiet, uncontested divorce, provided you drop the private criminal grand larceny complaints and cooperate with his bail application."
Arthur Vance let out a sharp, mocking laugh before Evelyn could even speak.
"Mr. Croft," Arthur said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. "You seem to be under the delusion that my client is bargaining from a position of weakness. Your client is currently facing fourteen federal counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement. The paper trail is ironclad. We have sworn affidavits from forensic accountants, certified signatures, and digital server logs."
"My client was manipulated!" Croft argued loudly, gesturing toward Thomas. "He was under extreme emotional distress and was preyed upon by Ms. Marissa Caldwell, who used her position as a junior corporate attorney to orchestrate the offshore account structures!"
"Oh, please," Valerie interjected coldly from across the table. "Save that ridiculous narrative for the tabloids, Harrison. Marissa Caldwell is currently sitting in a federal interrogation room three floors below us, signing a detailed thirty-page confession that pinpoints Thomas as the mastermind behind the entire scheme since October of last year."
Thomas snapped his head toward his lawyer, his face turning pale. "She... she signed a confession?!" he stammered, his voice thin and pathetic.
"She gave prosecutors every text, every email, and every offshore routing number in exchange for a recommended reduced sentence," Valerie added with a merciless smile. "She threw you under the bus before the ink on her bail agreement was even dry."
Thomas collapsed back into his chair, staring at the table in absolute despair. The woman he had risked his marriage, his family, and his freedom for had betrayed him the very second she faced real consequences.
Evelyn leaned forward, looking directly into Thomas's hollow, terrified eyes.
"You built your whole life on illusions, Thomas," Evelyn said, her voice surprisingly gentle, yet heavy with absolute truth. "You thought people loved you because of your money, your tuxedo, and your grand estate. But you are empty. You have always been empty."
"Evie... please," Thomas whispered, tears welling in his bloodshot eyes. "I made a mistake... a terrible, terrible mistake. I was lost. I was scared of getting old. Please don't let them send me to prison. I'll die in there..."
"You didn't make a mistake, Thomas," Evelyn corrected him sternly. "A mistake is a typo on a document. You spent eight months forging my name, stealing from our son, and planning to leave us broke while you ran off to South America. You didn't make a mistake. You revealed who you truly were."
Evelyn stood up, smoothing the front of her sharp cream-colored blazer. She looked down at his defense team.
"There will be no settlement," Evelyn stated clearly. "There will be no reduced charges. We will press every single count to the fullest extent of the law. Good day, gentlemen."

Without waiting for a response, Evelyn, Valerie, and Arthur walked out of the deposition room, leaving Thomas and his bewildered lawyers trapped in the quiet horror of their inescapable reality.
