Chapter 3 - Walking the Plank

The opening notes of the bridal march soared through the warm afternoon air, rich and resonant, wrapping the entire garden in an atmosphere of majestic celebration. The two hundred guests stood in quiet awe, admiring the breathtaking spectacle. White orchids swayed gently in the breeze, and the sunlight caught the delicate lace of Marissa’s gown as she began her slow, deliberate walk down the stone pathway.
Marissa moved with the poise of a queen receiving her crown. Her chin was held high, her eyes fixed on the stone arbor ahead. To the crowd, she looked like the picture of radiant innocence—a brilliant young attorney marrying into one of the state's most prestigious families. But behind her dazzling smile, her mind was racing through calculations.
*Just twenty minutes for the ceremony,* she thought to herself, her pulse quickening with illicit excitement. *Ten minutes for photos. Then the offshore confirmation ping should hit my phone. Thomas and I will be untouchable.*
She glanced briefly toward the left side of the aisle. Her firm's managing partner, Marcus Hayes, was sitting in the third row, nodding approvingly. Nearby sat Thomas’s high-profile corporate partners, the city's mayor, and several prominent judges. Marissa’s heart pounded with a dark, thrilling rush. She wasn't just walking toward a husband; she was walking toward the ultimate score.
At the end of the aisle stood Owen. He looked imposing, his broad shoulders filling out his charcoal suit. His face was an unreadable statue of calm. Not a single muscle twitched in his jaw. To anyone watching, he appeared to be a groom struck speechless by the beauty of his bride. In reality, he was counting down the seconds until her execution.
Beside Owen stood Thomas, looking dashing and supremely pleased with himself. As Marissa reached the arbor, Thomas offered her a subtle, fleeting nod of validation—a secret sign between co-conspirators hidden right in plain sight of two hundred people.
Marissa handed her bouquet to her maid of honor and took her place opposite Owen. She reached out to take his hands, but Owen subtly shifted his posture, keeping his hands clasped firmly behind his back in a respectful, formal stance. Marissa flicked her eyes up at him in brief confusion, but brushed it off as nerves.
The officiant, a distinguished elderly judge with a booming, warm voice, stepped forward between them. He smiled broadly at the gathered crowd before clearing his throat.
"Dearly beloved," the officiant began, his voice echoing clearly through the concealed garden speakers, "we are gathered here today in the presence of family, friends, and this wonderful community to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony."
In the front row, Evelyn sat perfectly erect. She wore her navy silk dress like armor. Beside her sat Valerie, holding the black leather portfolio resting on her knees. Evelyn’s hand rested softly in her lap, holding a small, metallic black remote control. Her thumb rested directly over the primary power button.
"Marriage," the officiant continued, his voice dripping with traditional solemnity, "is a sacred and serious endeavor. It is a union built upon the sacred pillars of absolute trust, unwavering loyalty, and unyielding honesty. It is a promise to stand by one another in light and in darkness, to protect one another from harm, and to honor the sacred bond of truth above all worldly temptations."
Thomas smiled warmly, nodding in solemn agreement with the officiant’s words. He even reached down to lightly pat his chest pocket, where his passport and single-use offshore security tokens were tucked away.
Owen’s eyes remained locked on Marissa. As the officiant spoke the word *honesty*, Owen let out a tiny, nearly imperceptible exhale through his nose.
"In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty," the officiant preached on, unaware of the nuclear bomb sitting beneath his feet, "the home created by two devoted souls serves as a sanctuary of integrity. There can be no true love where there is deceit. There can be no real foundation where there are lies."
Marissa maintained her luminous smile, though a faint prickle of heat touched the back of her neck. The officiant’s emphasis on *deceit* felt strangely heavy, but she forced herself to remain calm. *It's just standard religious fluff,* she reminded herself. *Just get to the vows.*
The officiant turned his page. The atmosphere in the garden was suffocatingly quiet, save for the gentle rustle of the maple leaves above.
"Therefore," the officiant said, taking a deep breath and raising his eyes to address the gallery, "if any person present here today knows of any legal, moral, or spiritual reason why this couple should not be lawfully joined in marriage, let them speak now... or forever hold their peace."
The standard ceremonial pause followed. It was a line spoken at thousands of weddings every day—a mere formality meant to last two brief seconds before moving on to the rings.
The garden was dead silent.
Thomas let out a soft, contented breath, preparing to step forward for the ring exchange.

Suddenly, from the very front row, the harsh, sharp sound of metal scraping violently against stone shattered the silence like a gunshot.
