Chapter 13 - Thomas's Reckoning

Three months after the wedding, the formal indictment of Thomas Sterling was finalized by the grand jury. With Marissa’s detailed confession and the mountains of forensic evidence provided by Aunt Valerie, Thomas was facing sixteen federal charges with virtually zero chance of acquittal.
Sitting in a stark, cold attorney-client visiting room at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Thomas stared at the steel cuffs binding his wrists to the heavy metal table.
The heavy steel door clicked open.
Thomas looked up, expecting to see his weary defense attorney. Instead, Evelyn walked into the room.
She wore a beautiful tailored emerald-green trench coat, her hair styled effortlessly, her skin glowing with a health and vitality that Thomas hadn't seen in years. She looked extraordinary—confident, radiant, and entirely whole.
Beside her walked Arthur Vance, carrying a slim leather folder.
Thomas swallowed hard, his voice raspy from weeks of silence. "Evie..."
Evelyn sat down across the metal table. She didn't look angry. She didn't look hurt. She looked at Thomas the way an art historian looks at an old, broken statue that no longer has any value.
"Hello, Thomas," Evelyn said calmly.
"You came," Thomas whispered, a flicker of pathetic hope sparking in his tired eyes. "I... I didn't think you would ever want to see me again."
"I didn't come to see you, Thomas," Evelyn replied smoothly. "I came to deliver these."
Arthur Vance opened the folder, pulling out a set of thick legal documents stamped with the official seal of the Supreme Court of New York. He slid them across the table, along with a black pen.
"These are the final, unconditional divorce papers," Arthur stated professionally. "Under the terms of the settlement, you forfeit all claims to the Sterling name, the physical real estate, the art collection, and any remaining domestic assets. In exchange, Mrs. Sterling will not seek restitution from whatever pitiful pension funds you have left after your federal fines are paid."
Thomas stared at the papers, his hand shaking uncontrollably. "Evie... please. Don't do this. I'm fifty-eight years old. They are talking about ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. I will die in prison..."
"Then you will die knowing you earned every single day of your sentence, Thomas," Evelyn said, her tone devoid of any cruelty, simply stating a cold fact.
"I loved you, Evie!" Thomas cried out, tears spilling down his hollow cheeks. "In my own way, I always loved you! The affair... the money... it was a disease! I was losing control of my life! I was terrified of getting old and irrelevant! You have to understand!"
Evelyn leaned in close, looking directly into the eyes of the man she had loved for nearly thirty years.
"Love is not a brand you wear to impress your wealthy friends, Thomas," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a powerful, quiet register. "Love is not forging your wife's signature while she sleeps in the next room. Love is not abandoning your own teenage daughter to protect your social standing. You didn't love me. You loved what I provided for your ego."
She tapped the signature line on the divorce document.
"Sign the papers, Thomas. Let me get back to my real life."
Thomas looked at her face, searching for a single trace of the submissive, quiet wife he had manipulated for decades. He found nothing but granite. Realizing he had zero leverage, zero power, and zero allies left in the world, Thomas picked up the black pen with a trembling hand.
He signed his name on the final line: *Thomas Sterling*.
Arthur checked the signature, stamped the notary seal onto the document, and tucked it neatly back into his portfolio.
Evelyn stood up, adjusting her emerald coat. She turned toward the steel door, knocking twice for the guard to open it.
"Goodbye, Thomas," Evelyn said, without looking back.

As the heavy steel door slammed shut behind her, Thomas collapsed onto the metal table, weeping uncontrollably into his hands, completely erased from the life he had sought to destroy.
