Chapter 4 - The Objection That Shook the World

The screech of the heavy iron chair legs grinding against the stone terrace vibrated through the entire garden.

Every single head in the audience snapped toward the front row.

Evelyn Sterling rose to her feet.

She stood tall, her navy silk dress catching the afternoon sun, her posture radiating an absolute, terrifying authority. Her face was entirely drained of softness, replaced by an icy, razor-sharp composure that shocked everyone who knew her as a gentle, quiet socialite.

The officiant froze mid-sentence, his jaw dropping open. The string quartet stopped playing mid-note, a dissonant screech lingering in the air before dying completely.

Thomas blinked, his warm smile freezing into an awkward, confused mask. "Evelyn?" he chuckled nervously, taking a half-step toward her, raising a dismissive hand toward the crowd. "Darling, what are you doing? Sit down, you're getting overwhelmed by nerves—"

Evelyn did not look at him. She looked directly at the officiant, her voice slicing through the garden like a freshly sharpened blade.

"I object."

A collective, sharp gasp ripped through the two hundred guests. Murmurs erupted instantly across the rows. Chairs rustled as people leaned forward, straining their necks to see.

Marissa’s face twitched, her perfectly applied bridal makeup suddenly looking like a fragile mask over rising panic. "Evelyn, please!" Marissa laughed, a high-pitched, fake sound that sounded horribly strained. "If this is about the seating arrangements or the menu choices, we can talk about it later—"

"I object to this marriage," Evelyn repeated, her voice echoing through the silent garden with absolute, unwavering force. "Because this wedding is not a celebration of love. It is a fraudulent cover-up."

Thomas’s face changed instantly. The warm, affectionate husband routine vanished, replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl. He stepped out from beneath the arbor, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he glared at his wife. "Evelyn, that is enough!" he barked, dropping all pretense of gentleness. "You are embarrassing yourself and making a scene in front of our distinguished guests! Sit down right now, or so help me—"

"Or so help you what, Thomas?" Owen’s deep, command-level voice boomed across the terrace.

Owen stepped forward, putting his broad frame directly between his father and Evelyn. He looked down at Thomas with absolute disdain, his eyes devoid of any filial respect.

"Don't you dare speak to my mother like that ever again," Owen said coldly.

Marissa’s eyes darted frantically between Owen and Thomas, her chest heaving as panic began to claw at her throat. "Owen, what is happening?!" she cried out, trying to grab his tuxedo sleeve. "What is wrong with your family?! Tell her to stop!"

Owen pulled his arm away from her touch as if she were infected with venom. "Watch the screen, Marissa."

Before anyone could comprehend the command, Evelyn raised her right hand. Clutched tightly in her palm was the sleek black remote control.

Directly behind the stone arbor sat a massive, 30-foot high-definition projection screen—the exact screen that Thomas had spent thousands of dollars erecting so that guests could watch a sentimental slideshow of Owen’s childhood and the couple's romance during the dinner reception.

Evelyn pressed the glowing center button.

With a heavy electronic hum, the massive screen flickered to life. High-powered digital projectors mounted on the patio beams hummed softly, casting a blinding light across the garden.

The guests held their breath, expecting family photos or a strange video error.

Instead, a high-resolution, crystal-clear security photograph burst onto the screen.

It showed the dark, secluded interior of a luxury elevator inside the Blackstone Hotel in downtown Manhattan, dated three weeks prior at 2:14 AM. In the center of the frame, pinned against the mirrored wall, was Thomas Sterling. Wrapped completely around his body, her lips locked onto his in a frantic, passionate kiss, was Marissa Caldwell.

The entire garden went completely, terrifyingly silent.

A second later, a loud, horrified gasp exploded from the third row. Marcus Hayes, the managing partner of Marissa’s law firm, stood straight up, his eyes bulging out of his head.

"My God!" someone screamed from the back row.

Marissa’s face drained of every ounce of color. She staggered backward, her bridal train wrapping around her heels, almost knocking her over. "No... no, no, turn it off! TURN IT OFF!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into hysteria.

"Turn that damn thing off right now!" Thomas roared, his face turning a dangerous, mottled purple. He lunged toward the AV control booth on the edge of the terrace. "Who authorized this?! Security! Turn off the power!"

"Security works for me today, Thomas," Aunt Valerie’s voice rang out from the side path.

Two massive, suited estate security guards stepped into the aisle, blocking Thomas’s path to the power controls like brick walls.

"Look at the screen, Thomas," Evelyn commanded, her voice steady and lethal. "We're just getting to the best part."
