“Not thinking about her every morning.”

One Sunday Margaret sent a letter from prison.

Emily almost laughed.
Margaret still did not understand.
She wrote back only once.

No insults.
No threats.
Nothing else.
Margaret never received another response.
Emily had spent years being accused of stealing Daniel from his mother.
Now she understood the most powerful thing she could do.
Refuse the competition entirely.
Daniel was responsible for his relationship with Margaret.
Emily was responsible for protecting Lily.
