Chapter 6 - The Company Behind the Family WarRichard Vale had worked for the Carters for twenty-seven years.

He was not family.
Margaret treated him like family.
Which, Emily now understood, might be more dangerous.
Investigators uncovered a hidden financial structure.
Margaret and Richard had borrowed enormous sums through shell companies.
They were quietly purchasing Carter Development shares from smaller investors.
Goal:
Take the company private.
For that, they needed voting control.
Charles Carter’s generational trust prevented it.
If Lily’s rights matured, Margaret’s path to control narrowed even further.
Emily stared at the financial map.
“So Lily isn’t just inheriting money.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She’s blocking them.”
“A three-year-old.”
“Legally, yes.”
That explained the anonymous paternity complaint.
If Lily could be removed from Daniel’s recognized bloodline, voting rights changed.
If Emily could be portrayed as dishonest, Daniel might support the challenge.
If Daniel left Emily and returned fully under Margaret’s influence—
even better.
Margaret’s plan depended on family conflict becoming corporate leverage.
Richard was arrested on financial-fraud charges unrelated to the child incident after investigators discovered false disclosures.
Then he offered cooperation.
His attorney contacted prosecutors.
Richard admitted:
Margaret knew the DNA test would likely prove Daniel’s paternity.
She never cared.
Her goal was delay.
Challenge the records.
Create court disputes.
Keep Lily’s trust rights uncertain long enough to complete the corporate restructuring.
Daniel whispered:
“She chained a toddler outside for a delay?”
Richard looked ashamed.
“That part was Margaret.”
“I never knew she would do that.”
Emily asked:
“What about the drugged chocolate?”
Richard immediately shook his head.
“I gave Helen a sealed package from Margaret.”
“I did not know what was inside.”
Again—
possible ignorance.
Possible cowardice.
Not innocence.
Then Richard revealed one final document.
A draft petition prepared weeks before the porch incident.
It sought temporary custody restrictions against Emily.
Basis:
Alleged infidelity.
Questionable paternity.
Emotional instability.
Unsafe parenting.
Photographs with Michael Reeves were attached.
Emily’s skin turned cold.
Margaret had planned not merely to break the marriage.
She planned to take Lily.
Daniel read the final page.
Proposed temporary guardian:
Margaret Carter.
His hands began shaking.
“This was never about getting Lily out of the family.”
Emily understood.
May you like
“No.”
“She wanted Lily under her control.”
