He looked like Daniel.
Older.
Rougher.
But undeniably family.
They met by video call.
Emily stayed beside Daniel.
Alexander stared at her.
“You’re Daniel’s wife?”
“Yes.”
“And Lily?”
“Our daughter.”
Alexander’s expression softened.
“I heard what Margaret did.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Alexander said:
“She used the same playbook on me.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Nineteen years earlier, Alexander wanted to sell his Carter Development shares.
He planned to leave New York.
Start another company.
Margaret considered it betrayal.
Then money disappeared from a project account.
$4.3 million.
Evidence pointed toward Alexander.
Computer records.
Signed authorizations.
Wire approvals.
He was forced out.
Daniel remembered the scandal.
“You admitted it.”
Alexander laughed.
“I admitted negligence.”
“Not theft.”
He had accepted a private settlement because Margaret threatened to destroy his wife’s career.
Daniel stared.
“You were married?”
“Yes.”
Nobody had told him.
Alexander continued.
“Your mother doesn’t just protect Carter Development.”
“She believes Carter Development is the family.”
“Anyone who wants a life outside it becomes the enemy.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
Exactly what Margaret had said on the porch.
You were supposed to take over the family company.
Alexander produced old emails.
One from Margaret:
You will regret choosing that woman over your blood.
Another:
Your wife has poisoned you against your own family.
Emily felt cold.
Same language.
Different generation.
Alexander said:
“Daniel, she isn’t afraid Emily will take your money.”
“She’s afraid Emily will convince you that you’re allowed to leave.”
Daniel covered his face.
Then Alexander revealed something worse.
The missing $4.3 million had resurfaced years later.
Inside a company controlled by Margaret.
Daniel stared.
“She framed you.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t Dad expose her?”
“I think he tried.”
“What happened?”
Alexander became quiet.
“Six months later, Dad changed his estate plan.”
“Then he died.”
Their father, Charles Carter, supposedly died of a sudden stroke.
No one had questioned it.
Alexander did not claim Margaret killed him.
He had no evidence.
But before Charles died, he had created the generational trust.
The same trust protecting Lily.
Emily suddenly understood.
Charles had anticipated Margaret trying to keep control.
The trust was not merely inheritance planning.
