Chapter 8 - Emily Does Not Take Him BackDaniel moved into a hotel.
Not because Emily ordered him to.
Because she needed space.
He asked once:
“Are we over?”
Emily answered:
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
No pressure.
No speeches.
No promises.
That was new.
Daniel entered therapy.
He also resigned as CEO of Carter Development during the investigation.
The board appointed independent leadership.
Alexander returned only as a witness and shareholder adviser.
He refused Daniel’s offer to restore him immediately.
“I spent nineteen years building a life away from the Carters.”
“I’m not coming back just because the truth did.”
Emily concentrated on Lily.
The little girl began waking at night.
She feared chains.
Porch doors.
Grandmothers in burgundy dresses.
A child therapist helped.
One afternoon Lily asked:
“Is Grandma bad?”
Emily answered carefully.
“Grandma did bad things.”
“Does she love Daddy?”
“Probably.”
“Does she love me?”
Emily stopped.
“I don’t know how Grandma understands love.”
Lily considered that.
Then:
“Love shouldn’t hurt?”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“No.”
“It shouldn’t.”
Daniel visited under Emily’s conditions.
At first Lily ran to him.
Then sometimes avoided him.
Both were allowed.
He never asked:
“Why don’t you hug Daddy?”
He learned.
One afternoon Lily refused to sit beside him.
Daniel simply said:
“Okay.”
Ten minutes later she climbed onto his lap herself.
Emily watched.
Change was rarely dramatic.
Sometimes it was an adult learning not to demand affection from a child.
Months passed.
Daniel eventually said:
“I want our marriage back.”
Emily answered:
“You cannot have it back.”
His face fell.
Then she continued:
“If we ever have something again, it will be new.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s fair.”
They did not reconcile immediately.
They dated again slowly.
Therapy.
Separate homes.
No assumption that Lily’s biological connection entitled Daniel to Emily’s trust.
