She brought everything.
The anonymous preschool complaint.
The DNA report.
Messages from Margaret.
Photographs taken by the private investigator.
The detective read quietly.
Then asked:
“Why was Margaret so interested in Lily’s parentage?”
“She said she wanted to protect Daniel.”
“From what?”
“Me.”
Sarah looked unconvinced.
“There may be another motive.”
Daniel joined them later.
He looked as if he had not slept.
“I know my mother.”
Emily looked at him.
“Do you?”
He accepted the hit.
“I thought I did.”
Daniel revealed something Emily did not know.
Carter Development was worth nearly $900 million.
Margaret owned thirty-two percent.
Daniel owned twenty-four.
But his late father’s trust contained another twenty percent.
When Margaret died, most of her shares would pass to Daniel.
Unless Daniel had children.
Then a portion transferred automatically into a generational trust.
Emily sat forward.
“How much?”
Daniel calculated.
“If Lily is legally recognized as my daughter…”
He stopped.
“What?”
“Eventually she controls almost fifteen percent of Carter Development.”
Emily stared.
Suddenly Margaret’s obsession had a financial structure.
If Lily were not Daniel’s biological child, the generational trust might not activate.
Daniel would inherit more direct control.
But why would Margaret care?
She was already wealthy.
Then Daniel said:
“There’s another clause.”
“What?”
“When a verified descendant reaches five years old, certain voting protections become permanent.”
Lily was three.
Margaret had less than two years.
Emily whispered:
“She wasn’t trying to prove Lily wasn’t yours.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She was trying to create enough doubt to challenge the trust.”
Detective Monroe asked:
“Who else benefits?”
Daniel answered:
“My younger brother.”
Emily frowned.
“You don’t have a younger brother.”
Daniel looked at her.
“My family never talks about him.”
His name was Alexander Carter.
Daniel had not seen him in nineteen years.
Margaret told everyone Alexander disappeared after stealing company money.
But Daniel admitted something strange.
“My father never believed he stole it.”
“Then why was he cut off?”
“My mother controlled the board.”
Detective Monroe closed the file.
“I think we need to find Alexander.”
Three days later, they did.
He was living in Oregon.
He agreed to speak to Daniel under one condition.
“Your mother isn’t involved.”
“She’s under investigation.”
Alexander laughed bitterly.
“Then maybe you’re finally ready.”
