Chapter 30 - The Sterling Heir

Richard Crawford survived.

Barely.

Emergency crews extracted him twelve minutes later through a secondary service tunnel.

He was hospitalized under guard with severe respiratory injuries.

The archive was devastated.

But Parker had made one mistake.

He believed the documents were the evidence.

They weren't.

Before entering the basement, Adrian had activated a continuous encrypted body-camera stream.

Everything Parker confessed had been recorded.

His manipulation of Dominic.

His partnership with Eleanor.

His knowledge of the Crawford Protocol.

His attempt to trap us underground.

Federal investigators received the footage before sunrise.

By noon, Parker Crawford was one of the most wanted financial fugitives in the country.

Eleanor disappeared with him.

Chloe entered protective custody.

And Dominic?

For the first time, I requested to see him.

He entered the federal visitation room looking thinner than before.

When he saw me, surprise crossed his face.

“Vivienne?”

I sat opposite him.

“Did you know Parker arranged our meeting?”

Dominic stared at me.

“What?”

“Chicago.”

His confusion looked genuine.

Then something changed.

Recognition.

“There was a recruiter.”

“What recruiter?”

“A man contacted me before the conference.”

My pulse accelerated.

“He told me someone important would be attending.”

“Did he give you my name?”

“No.”

Dominic leaned closer to the glass.

“He gave me a photograph.”

My stomach dropped.

“What did he tell you?”

Dominic looked ashamed.

“That you came from a family with connections.”

“So you approached me intentionally.”

“At first.”

The words hurt less than I expected.

“And afterward?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I forgot about the money.”

I remained silent.

“I loved you, Vivienne.”

“You loved what standing beside me made you feel.”

“No.”

He pressed his hand against the glass.

“I loved you. And then I became terrified that everyone would realize you were better than me.”

There it was.

The pathetic truth beneath everything.

Parker had opened the door.

Dominic had chosen to walk through it.

“You still made your choices,” I said.

“I know.”

For once, he didn't beg.

I stood.

“Goodbye, Dominic.”

“Vivienne.”

I stopped.

“Protect Aria.”

I turned.

Dominic looked genuinely afraid.

“Parker talked about her before she was born.”

My blood chilled.

“What did he say?”

“He said your daughter would become the most valuable person in the Sterling family.”

I left without another word.

That evening, I returned home.

Aria was sitting on the nursery rug, laughing as she attempted to stack wooden blocks.

I lowered myself beside her.

She immediately crawled into my lap.

Outside, Sterling security patrolled the grounds.

Inside, my parents were finally confronting secrets buried for nearly four decades.

Adrian was searching for Parker.

Richard Crawford remained alive.

Eleanor remained missing.

And somewhere in the world, my newly discovered brother was preparing his next move.

But something had changed.

I was no longer reacting.

I was planning.

My father entered the nursery carrying a folder.

“We found Parker's offshore network.”

I looked up.

“How large?”

Arthur placed the folder beside me.

“Larger than Sterling Global.”

I opened it.

Companies stretched across London, Zurich, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, and the Cayman Islands.

At the center was one organization.

THE CRAWFORD CONSORTIUM.

Adrian entered behind him.

“We also found something else.”

He handed me a photograph.

Parker stood beside Eleanor.

But there was a third person.

A woman.

Young.

Elegant.

Blonde.

I didn't recognize her.

My father did.

The folder slipped from his hands.

“That's impossible.”

“Who is she?” I asked.

Arthur stared at the photograph as though he had seen a ghost.

When he finally spoke, his voice trembled.

“Daniel Vale's daughter.”

Adrian went completely still.

“My father didn't have a daughter.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Yes.”

His face turned pale.

“He did.”

Adrian stared at the woman standing beside Parker.

“Then who is she?”

My father swallowed.

“Her name is Evelyn Vale.”

A long silence filled the nursery.

“And if she's alive,” Arthur whispered, “then Daniel lied about more than we ever imagined.”

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message appeared.

HELLO, VIVIENNE.

Then another.

MY BROTHER ADRIAN HAS ONLY TOLD YOU HALF THE STORY.

A final photograph loaded.

Evelyn stood outside Sterling Tower.

The photograph had been taken less than ten minutes earlier.

Her final message appeared.

PARKER ISN'T COMING FOR YOUR EMPIRE.

HE'S TRYING TO SAVE YOU FROM IT.

I slowly lifted my eyes toward Adrian.

For the first time since meeting him, his confidence disappeared.

“Vivienne,” he said quietly.

“I can explain.”

I stood, holding Aria against my chest.

“No.”

My eyes locked onto his.

“This time, Adrian…”

“You tell me everything.”

Outside the nursery windows, lightning split the Seattle sky.

And for the first time, I wondered whether Parker was truly the greatest enemy hiding inside my family.

May you like

Or whether I had been standing beside the real one all along.

To be continued.
