Chapter 21 - The Empty Chair
Parker's empty chair frightened me more than any threat Dominic had ever made.
Dominic had been predictable.
Weak men usually were.
They screamed when cornered, begged when consequences arrived, and blamed everyone except themselves when their carefully constructed lives collapsed.
Parker was different.
Parker had spent years sitting at our dinner table.
He had held Aria three days after she was born.
He had handled my annulment.
He had personally delivered the documents that destroyed Dominic.
And while I believed he was protecting me, he had apparently been standing inside the walls of my family all along.
“Freeze everything,” I repeated.
My father immediately reached for his phone.
Within minutes, Sterling Global's emergency financial protocol was activated.
Private trusts were locked.
Executive credentials were suspended.
International transfers above fifty thousand dollars required dual biometric authorization.
Every corporate aircraft owned or leased by Sterling Aviation was grounded.
Adrian stood near the monitor, staring at the frozen image of his father's face.
“Parker knew about this recording,” he said.
I turned toward him.
“How?”
“He didn't run because his name appeared on a thirty-two-year-old document.”
Adrian pointed toward the screen.
“He ran because he knew what came next.”
That realization hit me instantly.
“The rest of the video.”
I pressed play.
Daniel Vale continued speaking.
“If the Crawford operation survives, it will survive through blood. Richard believes corporations are temporary. Families are permanent.”
He held up another document.
“The Crawfords created something called the Continuity Protocol.”
My father went pale.
“What is that?”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“A mechanism designed to place one of Richard Crawford's descendants inside Sterling leadership permanently.”
The recording ended.
I stared at the black screen.
Parker wasn't simply betraying us.
