Chapter 18 - The Siege of Sterling GlobalBy the opening bell the following morning, Sterling Global was under attack.

Institutional partners demanded explanations.
Banks requested emergency calls.
Three board members called for my father's temporary suspension.
Reporters surrounded Sterling Tower.
But the most dangerous attack wasn't coming from the media.
It was coming from inside our boardroom.
At 10:00 AM, twelve directors gathered around the massive walnut conference table.
My father sat silently at one end.
I sat opposite him.
Board member Charles Whitmore cleared his throat.
“Arthur, until these allegations are resolved, we believe leadership continuity requires temporary restructuring.”
“You mean removal,” I said.
Charles avoided my eyes.
“A temporary leave.”
“And who becomes chairman?”
Nobody answered.
That was when I understood.
This wasn't damage control.
It was a coup.
“Who approached you?”
Charles stiffened.
“Excuse me?”
I opened the folder Parker had given me five minutes earlier.
“Vale Strategic Capital didn't purchase enough exposure to control Sterling.”
Adrian, seated as an invited observer, watched carefully.
“So somebody else has been buying.”
I slid several documents across the table.
“Four offshore funds accumulated derivative positions tied to Sterling subsidiaries over the last nine months.”
Several directors shifted uncomfortably.
“All four funds trace back to one beneficial owner.”
My father looked at me.
“Who?”
I turned toward Charles.
“Richard Crawford.”
My mother's father.
My supposedly dead grandfather.
The room erupted.
My father stood so violently his chair struck the wall.
“Richard died twelve years ago.”
“No,” Parker said from the doorway.
“He disappeared twelve years ago.”
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
An elderly male voice spoke.
“Hello, Vivienne.”
May you like
My entire body froze.
“I've waited a very long time to meet my granddaughter.”
