Chapter 17 - The Voice From 1994The cassette recording lasted fourteen minutes.

We listened without speaking.
Daniel Vale's voice emerged through static.
He sounded terrified.
He described hidden investors, illegal loans, shell corporations, and threats against his family.
But then came the sentence none of us expected.
Arthur tried to get me out.
I looked at my father.
Adrian did too.
The recording continued.
Daniel explained that Arthur Sterling had attempted to cancel the waterfront transaction after discovering who was financing it.
Someone else had refused.
Someone with enough influence to threaten both men.
A third partner.
A silent investor whose name had been erased from every surviving corporate document.
Then Daniel said it.
Richard Crawford.
My mother's maiden name.
I turned toward her.
She had gone completely pale.
“Mom?”
My father whispered, “Vivienne—”
“No.”
I stood.
“Someone tells me the truth now.”
My mother slowly lowered herself into a chair.
“Richard Crawford was my father.”
My grandfather.
The man whose portrait had hung in our family library throughout my childhood.
The philanthropist.
The decorated businessman.
The man my father had told me would have been proud of me.
My mother began crying.
“My father financed Sterling & Vale.”
Adrian stared at her.
“And when Daniel tried to expose him?”
My mother closed her eyes.
“He threatened Daniel's wife and child.”
Adrian's expression became stone.
“That child was me.”
No one spoke.
Then the conference room doors opened.
Parker rushed inside.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
He placed his phone on the table.
Every major financial news network was running the same breaking headline.
