Chapter 7 - The Son Who Came Back Differently
Ethan and Vanessa divorced.
He did not ask Margaret to attend the hearing.
He did not send long letters describing how much he had changed.
He began therapy.
He reviewed every account Vanessa had managed.
He returned money that had been taken from Margaret and paid for her medical care without asking for control over her finances.
Six months after the trial, Margaret invited him for dinner.
He arrived carrying flowers.
She looked at them.
“Those are expensive.”
“I know.”
“Do you think expensive flowers repair neglect?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She placed them in water.
During dinner, Ethan noticed her medicine organizer beside the refrigerator.
He did not touch it.
He asked whether she needed help.
She said no.
He accepted the answer.
That was new.
Later, Margaret stood slowly.
Ethan moved instinctively to assist her.
Then stopped.
“May I?”
She looked at him.
“Yes.”
He offered his arm.
She used it only until she reached her cane.
Their relationship returned in small permissions.
