Chapter 4 - The House Vanessa Thought She Owned
The police arrested Vanessa for financial exploitation, forgery and assault.
Before they took her away, she turned toward Ethan.
“This house is half mine.”
Margaret almost smiled.
“No.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“My husband inherited it.”
“No.”
Margaret opened the drawer beneath the hallway table and removed a sealed folder.
Her late husband, Robert Hale, had owned the property.
After his death, the house passed into a family trust.
Margaret held the right to live there for the rest of her life.
After her death, Ethan would receive the property only if he had not participated in financial abuse or coercion against her.
Vanessa had seen an incomplete copy of the trust and assumed Ethan already owned the house.
She had pressured him into signing renovation papers, then used his electronic signature to create false ownership documents.
Ethan had believed he was approving repairs.
Vanessa used the paperwork to apply for a loan against the property.
The lender contacted Margaret because the trust administrator had to approve any lien.
That call alerted her to the fraud.
“You told me the loan was for the kitchen,” Ethan said.
“It was for our future.”
“Our future?”
Vanessa’s company had used the borrowed funds to lease a luxury apartment downtown.
She had also made a deposit on a second property.
In both applications, she listed herself as unmarried.
Detective Harris showed Ethan the forms.
Vanessa looked away.
“Who were you planning to live there with?” he asked.
She said nothing.
Police later recovered messages between Vanessa and a real-estate developer named Adrian Cross.
They had been having an affair for more than a year.
Vanessa told Adrian that Ethan would eventually inherit Margaret’s house.
She planned to force Margaret into assisted living, sell the property and leave Ethan once the money was accessible.
But the trust contained another clause.
If Margaret was removed from the home through coercion, the property would transfer immediately to a charitable foundation.
