Chapter 3 - The Cameras She Forgot

Vanessa laughed again.
“You think a bank statement proves abuse?”
Margaret reached into the pocket of her cardigan.
She removed a small black remote.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What is that?”
Margaret pressed one button.
The television turned on.
The screen displayed the living room from an angle near the ceiling.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
Crawl through my legs.
The recording continued.
The missing pendant.
The threats.
The slap.
Everything.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Margaret had installed three hidden cameras after Vanessa claimed she had fallen alone in the bathroom.
A home-care nurse noticed bruises on Margaret’s arm and advised her to document anything suspicious.
Margaret did not tell Ethan immediately.
She had tried calling him twice.
Vanessa answered his phone while he was sleeping and said he was unavailable.
Then she changed the Wi-Fi password and took Margaret’s tablet.
“I was waiting until I had enough evidence,” Margaret said.
Ethan looked devastated.
“You should have told me.”
“I did.”
He lowered his eyes.
She had sent him a message saying Vanessa was controlling her medication.
Ethan replied:
She is under stress. Please try to cooperate until I return.
He had wanted peace more than truth.
Vanessa stepped toward the television and unplugged it.
The screen went black.
“The recordings are illegal.”
“They are backed up,” Margaret said.
Vanessa turned.
For the first time, fear appeared openly in her face.
The doorbell rang.
Two police officers entered with Detective Laura Harris.
Margaret had scheduled the home-care nurse to visit that afternoon.
When the nurse received no answer, she contacted the police.
Vanessa had locked Margaret inside the house and dismissed the household staff.
She had assumed Ethan would not return for two more days.
Detective Harris took the bank statement.
“Mrs. Hale, we also received a report from the financial institution this morning.”
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
He had not made the call.
Margaret had.
Two weeks earlier, she used the landline in the laundry room after Vanessa forgot to disconnect it.
She reported unauthorized transfers and forged checks.
The bank froze the account.
Vanessa did not know because she had continued spending through credit cards opened in Margaret’s name.
Detective Harris placed several documents on the table.
A home-equity application.
A medical-power-of-attorney form.
A petition asking the court to declare Margaret legally incompetent.
Every document carried Margaret’s signature.
None had been signed by her.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“You were trying to take control of her house.”
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“She should not be living alone.”
“She was not alone.”
May you like
Margaret’s voice became cold.
“She was trapped with you.”
