Chapter 1 - Crawl

“Get down.”
Margaret Hale stood in the center of the living room, one hand gripping her cane and the other pressed against her aching chest.
Across from her, Vanessa spread her feet apart and pointed toward the floor beneath her dress.
“I said crawl.”
Margaret stared at her daughter-in-law.
The woman her son had married three years earlier no longer bothered hiding what she had become.
At first, Vanessa’s cruelty had arrived in small pieces.
She moved Margaret’s medicine and accused her of forgetting where she had placed it.
She reduced her meals, then told neighbors the older woman had lost her appetite.
She locked the upstairs bathroom and claimed the plumbing was broken.
Whenever Margaret complained, Vanessa smiled.
“You’re confused again.”
Ethan was away on a six-week business trip in Germany.
Vanessa believed no one would challenge her.
Margaret tightened her hand around the cane.
“I will not.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You live in my house.”
“This was my husband’s house.”
“And your son gave it to me.”
“He did no such thing.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
She was holding Margaret’s medical-alert pendant.
The same pendant Margaret wore in case she fell.
Vanessa had taken it from her neck that morning.
“You want this back?”
Margaret looked at it.
“Put it on the table.”
“Crawl through my legs.”
Vanessa opened her stance wider.
“Then I might give it back.”
Margaret’s face burned with humiliation, but her voice remained steady.
“You think weakness means obedience.”
“I think you’re an old woman who has nowhere else to go.”
Vanessa pointed toward the floor again.
“Down.”
Margaret slowly lowered her cane.
For one second, Vanessa smiled, believing she had won.
Then Margaret swung the cane sideways and struck the marble floor with all the strength she had.
The sound cracked through the room.
“No.”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
Margaret straightened as far as her body allowed.
“You can withhold food. Hide my medicine. Lock doors. But you will never make me crawl for your entertainment.”
Vanessa stepped forward and slapped her.
The blow turned Margaret’s face.
She almost fell.
But before Vanessa could touch her again, the front door opened.
A suitcase struck the floor.
Ethan stood in the entrance.

He had returned from Germany two days early.
And he had seen everything.
