Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Past

The next morning, the Vance estate felt different. The oppressive, sterile chill that had lingered since the bombing that killed Maya’s mother two years ago seemed to have finally lifted, replaced by a strange, fragile warmth.

In the massive industrial kitchen, Clara was busy prepping breakfast. She was rolling out dough for cinnamon scones—the exact recipe her grandmother had taught her, the ones she had slipped under the dining table to Maya weeks ago.

The swinging door pushed open, and Julian Reyes walked in, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

"Morning, Clara," Julian said, leaning against the counter. He looked at her with a new kind of respect in his sharp eyes. Gone was the condescending glare she used to get from the higher-ranking staff. "Smells good."

"Scones," Clara replied, keeping her hands busy with the flour. "For Maya. Dr. Hayes said she can have soft foods today."

Julian chuckled softly. "You know, in the five years I've worked for Damian, I've never seen him look at anyone the way he looked at you last night."

Clara’s hands stopped kneading the dough. Her cheeks burned bright red. "Mr. Vance was just... grateful."

"Damian doesn't do 'grateful,' Clara," Julian said knowingly. "Damian survives. And right now, he wants you by his side."

Before Clara could formulate a response, the kitchen door swung open again.

It was Damian. He was dressed casually in a dark grey sweater and slacks, holding Maya by the hand. The little girl looked pale, but her eyes were bright, and she was clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly under her arm.

"Cee-Cee!" Maya cried out, letting go of her father's hand and running across the kitchen tile as fast as her little legs could carry her.

Clara dropped the rolling pin, dropped to her knees just in time, and caught Maya in a massive, encompassing hug, burying her face in the little girl's dark curls.

"Hey, brave girl," Clara whispered, her voice thick with tears. "How are you feeling?"

"Hungry," Maya announced proudly, pulling back to look at Clara. "And I want a cinnamon scone. The ones with the secret ingredient."

Damian walked up behind them, standing over the two of them with his hands tucked into his pockets. A genuine, unguarded smile broke across his handsome, weathered face—the first real smile Clara had ever witnessed on the underworld kingpin.

"What is the secret ingredient?" Damian asked, looking down at Clara.

Clara looked up, her heart hammering against her ribs, caught between the terrifying reality of her position and the profound, undeniable warmth blooming in her chest.

"A little bit of extra butter, Mr. Vance," Clara smiled softly. "And the belief that thunder is just heaven rearranging its furniture."
