Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The echoes of Maya’s ragged cough still vibrated against the cold stone walls of the underground vault, but the suffocating dread in the room had shifted into something far more dangerous.

Damian Vance rose slowly from the concrete floor, holding his daughter tightly against his chest. His breathing was heavy, controlled, and laced with a suppressed fury that made the air feel thin. He walked past Clara without a word, his charcoal overcoat brushing her shoulder as he ascended the stairs.

At the top of the stairwell, Julian Reyes was already waiting. Eleanor Sterling was pressed against the mahogany wall of the kitchen, her designer blouse torn at the shoulder where Julian had gripped her, her mascara running in dark streaks down her cheeks.

"Julian," Damian's voice was barely a whisper, yet it cut through the room like a razor. "Take Maya to the master suite. Get Dr. Hayes on the encrypted line immediately."

"Right away, boss," Julian murmured, stepping forward. He gently took Maya from Damian's arms. The little girl buried her face in Julian's neck, her small hands clutching his lapel.

As Julian carried her away, Damian turned his full, terrifying attention toward Eleanor.

Eleanor’s breath hitched. She opened her mouth to speak, to deploy her usual arsenal of gaslighting, high-society charm, and family threats, but Damian crossed the floor in two long strides and grabbed her by the throat. He didn't squeeze hard enough to crush her windpipe—not yet—but enough to pin her completely flat against the wood-paneled wall, lifting her heels slightly off the floor.

"Leo—" Eleanor choked out, her manicured fingers clawing frantically at his leather-gloved hand. "My father will—"

"Your father owns three shipping ports in the Atlantic," Damian interrupted, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I own the shipping lanes, the customs inspectors, and the men who unload the cargo. If you ever breathe near my daughter again, Eleanor, I won't just kill you. I will dismantle your family name until it is illegal to speak it in polite society."

He shoved her backward. Eleanor slammed onto the polished tile, gasping and coughing, her crystal flute shattering entirely beneath her weight as she hit the floor.

Damian didn't look down at her. He turned his gaze toward the corner of the kitchen, where Clara Hayes was quietly trying to bandage her split knuckles with a paper towel.
