Chapter 4 - The Solarium Conversation

Upstairs in the master suite, Dr. Hayes had finished administering a secondary round of nebulizer treatments. Maya was finally sleeping, her breathing deep, steady, and peaceful.

Damian stood beside her bed, watching the rise and fall of her small chest. A soft knock sounded at the door. He turned to see Clara standing in the hallway, hesitating at the threshold. She had changed into a clean, albeit slightly oversized, spare uniform.

"Come in," Damian said quietly, stepping away from the bed so as not to wake his daughter.

Clara stepped into the room, wringing her hands together. "How is she?"

"Sleeping," Damian said. "The doctor said her oxygen levels are fully stabilized. If you hadn't administered the inhaler when you did..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't have to. The unspoken reality hung heavy in the air between them.

"She's a strong girl," Clara murmured, looking down at Maya. "She's much stronger than people give her credit for."

"Just like the woman who saved her," Damian replied, his dark eyes locking onto Clara’s face.

Clara flushed crimson, looking down at her sensible black shoes. "I didn't do anything special, Mr. Vance. Anyone would have done it."

"No," Damian corrected sharply. "Eighteen nannies fled this estate in two years when things got difficult. The entire security detail missed the commotion because Eleanor had them distracted in the west wing. You were the only one who heard her. You were the only one who fought a woman with twice your social standing to save a child who isn't even yours."

"She is mine, in a way," Clara said softly, a stray tear slipping down her cheek. "When I lost my grandmother... I knew what it felt like to be invisible in a room full of people. Maya and I... we understood each other."

Damian walked closer to her, stopping just inches away. The sheer physical presence of the crime boss was overwhelming, but there was no threat in his posture now—only a deep, burning reverence.

"I've spent my entire life building walls, Clara," Damian said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate rumble. "I thought power and fear were the only things that could protect the people I love. Today, I realized how wrong I was. Fear let Eleanor into this house. Only your courage kept my daughter alive."
