Chapter 9 - THE COURTROOM

The custody hearing became national news.

The judge reviewed everything.

The original dinner footage.

The unedited recording.

Lily's medical records.

The financial documents.

The fake custody reports.

The $18 million shell company.

The secret trust.

The attempted manipulation of Lily's inheritance.

And the testimony from investigators.

Adrian's attorney tried to argue that he loved his daughter.

My lawyer asked one question.

“Then why did you create a trust designed to remove the child's mother from control of her assets?”

Adrian had no answer.

The judge turned toward him.

“Mr. Mercer?”

He looked down.

“I'm waiting.”

Adrian whispered:

“I made mistakes.”

The judge's expression hardened.

“These were not mistakes.”

“You systematically attempted to isolate the mother of your child.”

“You falsified financial documents.”

“You manipulated custody proceedings.”

“You allowed a minor child to be exposed to deliberate psychological provocation.”

“And you used her inheritance as leverage.”

The judge paused.

“Do you understand the seriousness of this?”

Adrian said nothing.

The ruling came that afternoon.

I received sole legal custody.

Adrian received supervised visitation subject to court review.

The financial trusts connected to Lily were removed from his control.

An independent trustee was appointed.

And the court referred the financial crimes for prosecution.

The judge also issued a protective order.

Adrian could not approach me outside supervised proceedings.

When I walked out of the courthouse, I felt strangely calm.

My lawyer smiled.

“You won.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I protected my daughter.”

“That is different.”

She smiled.

“Perhaps.”

Outside, reporters waited.

I didn't speak to them.

My father was waiting beside the car.

He hugged me.

“You did it.”

I looked at the courthouse.

“No.”

“We did.”

He smiled.

“You always were stubborn.”

I laughed.

“That's your fault.”

Back home, Lily ran into my arms.

“Mommy!”

I held her tightly.

She looked over my shoulder.

“Where's Daddy?”

I hesitated.

“He's going to stay somewhere else for a while.”

“Why?”

“Because sometimes grown-ups make decisions that aren't safe.”

She thought about that.

“Are we safe?”

I kissed her forehead.

“Yes.”

That was all she needed.

That night, I put her to bed.

Then I returned to my office.

The final audit was on my desk.

Adrian had stolen millions.

Chloe had received millions.

Charles had manipulated the trust.

But the company had survived.

The real problem was what they had done to each other.

They had believed money made them powerful.

Instead, money revealed who they were.
