Chapter 7 - THE ACCOUNT THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

The account was held at a private bank in Switzerland.
My mother's name was on it.
Her signature appeared on the original authorization documents.
But my mother had died four years earlier.
There was no way she could have opened the account.
Unless someone had forged everything.
I flew to Switzerland with my father's legal team.
My father insisted on coming.
“I don't want you doing this alone.”
I smiled.
“I've been doing things alone for a long time.”
“Not anymore.”
The bank director met us privately.
He placed a file on the table.
“Mrs. Mercer, the account was opened twelve years ago.”
“Twelve?”
“Yes.”
“Who authorized it?”
“Your mother's attorney.”
“What was the original purpose?”
“Estate planning.”
“My mother didn't have that much money.”
The director hesitated.
“Apparently she did.”
He opened another page.
The account had received deposits totaling nearly $40 million over eleven years.
My father's name appeared on several transfers.
So did Adrian's.
I stared.
“Why would my husband be receiving money from my mother's estate?”
“He wasn't.”
The bank director pointed to the transfers.
“Mr. Mercer never received the money directly.”
“Then where did it go?”
“Investment vehicles.”
“Which ones?”
“M several.”
He handed me a list.
Mercer Strategic Holdings.
Chloe Bennett Consulting.
Three offshore trusts.
And one company I didn't recognize.
Blue Crown Capital.
My father looked at the name.
He went completely still.
“What?”
He said nothing.
“Dad.”
He looked at me.
“Your mother knew.”
“Knew what?”
“She knew Adrian wasn't who he claimed to be.”
I felt sick.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't have proof.”
I stared at him.
“How long?”
“Since before your wedding.”
The room became silent.
I stood abruptly.
“You let me marry him?”
“I tried to stop it.”
“How?”
“I asked your mother to speak to you.”
“She didn't.”
“She was afraid.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was afraid.”
My father lowered his head.
“I made mistakes.”
I looked at the account statement.
“Then help me fix them.”
We traced Blue Crown Capital.
It was owned by a trust.
The trust belonged to a company registered in London.
The company was controlled by—
Chloe.
My stomach turned.
“Why would my mother send money there?”
My father looked at me.
“She didn't.”
“What?”
“The transfers happened after she died.”
I stared.
The account had been manipulated.
Someone had used my mother's identity.
Someone had forged everything.
And then I saw the beneficiary name.
LILY MERCER.
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
My father looked at the document.
“That's your daughter's name.”
The money had been moved into a structure apparently designed to protect Lily.
At first, it looked almost noble.
Then we found the attached clause.
If I were deemed unfit as a mother, the trust administrator would control Lily's assets.
Who was the administrator?
Adrian.
I felt sick.
He had built a financial trap around my daughter.
If the court removed me, he would control the trust.
Then he would control the money.
Then he could potentially use the money to influence the company.
The custody case was never only about Lily.
It was about billions.
I called my lawyer.
“We found the real motive.”
“What?”
“Adrian created a trust in Lily's name.”
“What kind?”
“One designed to activate if I lost custody.”
Silence.
Then:
“Send me everything.”
I did.
Within hours, emergency proceedings were filed.
But another surprise was waiting.
A confidential memo had been found in the trust records.
It contained a sentence written by my mother.
If Adrian Mercer ever attempts to control Lily's inheritance, assume he is not acting alone.
I stared at the sentence.
Not acting alone.
Who else?
Then I saw a handwritten initial beneath it.
C.
I looked at my father.
“Who is C?”
He didn't answer.
That frightened me.
“Dad.”
Finally, he whispered:
“Your mother's brother.”
“My uncle?”
“Yes.”
“What was his name?”
“Charles.”
“Where is he?”
My father looked toward the window.
“We haven't seen him in fifteen years.”
I felt cold.
May you like
Maybe Adrian's plan had never been only Adrian's.
Maybe the real mastermind was still free.
