Chapter 5 - THE QUEEN RETURNS

The ballroom of the Mercer Grand was filled with light.

Crystal chandeliers.

White roses.

Champagne.

Hundreds of guests.

Adrian stood on the stage beside Chloe.

They were receiving congratulations.

The host called Adrian “the future of the company.”

He smiled.

Chloe held his arm.

They looked victorious.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

I walked in.

Conversation stopped.

Every head turned.

I was wearing a black haute couture gown.

Simple.

Elegant.

A diamond necklace my father had given me years ago.

Behind me walked four members of my security team.

But the people didn't recognize them.

They were staring at me.

Adrian's face went white.

“Mara?”

Chloe's smile disappeared.

I walked toward the stage.

No crying.

No shouting.

Just silence.

Adrian stepped down.

“You need to leave.”

“No.”

“This is a private event.”

“I know.”

He lowered his voice.

“What are you doing?”

I smiled.

“Correcting the record.”

I walked onto the stage.

The host looked confused.

Adrian reached for the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please excuse my wife.”

I took another microphone.

“She means former wife.”

Gasps.

Adrian stared.

“Our legal teams are currently filing.”

Chloe whispered:

“You can't do this.”

I turned toward her.

“I can.”

Then the screen behind us changed.

The first video appeared.

The complete dinner.

Lily crying.

Chloe filming.

Adrian ignoring her.

Victoria? No.

The truth.

The ballroom became silent.

Then the audio.

Adrian's voice:

Once the custody order is approved, we take the company.

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Then the bank records.

The unauthorized transfers.

The shell companies.

The payments.

Then the custody strategy.

Then the psychological reports.

Then the original recordings.

Adrian stepped forward.

“That's illegal.”

My lawyer spoke from the audience.

“No.”

“It's evidence.”

The ballroom doors opened.

Federal investigators entered.

Then police.

An officer approached Adrian.

“Adrian Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“You are being detained pending investigation.”

His face collapsed.

Chloe tried to move toward the exit.

Another officer stopped her.

“You too.”

She began crying.

“This isn't fair.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

“It isn't.”

“You should have thought about fairness before you filmed my daughter crying.”

Adrian stared at me.

“Your family did this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You did.”

He was handcuffed.

Chloe was escorted away.

I remained on the stage.

The room was silent.

Then I spoke.

“I didn't come here to humiliate anyone.”

“I came because lies should not become evidence.”

“And because my daughter deserves a mother who will protect her.”

The applause didn't come.

It didn't need to.

The truth had already spoken.

When I left the ballroom, my father was waiting outside.

He hugged me.

“You did well.”

I nodded.

“Lily is safe?”

“She's with Mrs. Hale.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

My father looked toward the ballroom.

“You know what happens now.”

“Yes.”

“The company?”

“Mine again.”

“The marriage?”

“Over.”

“The future?”

I looked toward the city lights.

May you like

“Just beginning.”

And for the first time, I wasn't afraid of what came next.
