Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN THEY WANTED TO DESTROY

I didn't realize how carefully they had planned everything until I saw the first video.

I was sitting in a cheap hotel room at 2:00 a.m.

Lily had finally fallen asleep.

I had spent the previous hour rocking her.

Her fever had started to come down.

I was exhausted.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

You should watch this.

There was a video attached.

I opened it.

The first few seconds showed the dining room.

Lily crying.

My voice rising.

Then the broken vase.

Then me walking away.

But the beginning had been removed.

No Victoria.

No slap.

No Chloe provoking me.

No Adrian ignoring our daughter.

The caption read:

“Adrian Mercer's wife has another breakdown in front of their baby.”

My stomach dropped.

Thousands of views.

Hundreds of comments.

People called me unstable.

Cruel.

Dangerous.

Someone wrote:

“Someone needs to take that child away from her.”

I stopped reading.

Another video appeared.

It showed me crying in the kitchen.

The clip had been recorded weeks earlier.

Another showed me dropping a plate.

Another showed me arguing with Adrian.

Every video had been edited.

Every one was designed to tell the same story.

I was mentally unstable.

I was a terrible mother.

I was dangerous around Lily.

I called Adrian.

He answered after three rings.

“You've seen them.”

“You uploaded these.”

“No.”

“Then Chloe did.”

“She says you need help.”

I closed my eyes.

“You planned this.”

“Mara, you're exhausted.”

“You've been collecting clips for months.”

“Because you keep behaving irrationally.”

“Did you prepare a custody case too?”

He didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

“Adrian.”

“I think Lily would be safer with me.”

I almost stopped breathing.

“You've already filed?”

“You walked out.”

“You pushed me into leaving.”

“You smashed a vase.”

“After your mother hit our daughter!”

He lowered his voice.

“Prove it.”

I hung up.

The next morning, my lawyer called.

She sounded serious.

“Mara, I need you to understand what's happening.”

“What?”

“They've already filed a custody petition.”

“How?”

“They've attached psychological reports.”

“I'm not mentally ill.”

“I know.”

“They're fabricated.”

“I suspect so.”

Then she said something that turned my blood cold.

“They've also requested an emergency order.”

“Based on what?”

“Video evidence.”

I looked at Lily.

“They're trying to take her.”

“Yes.”

I swallowed.

“Can they?”

“They can try.”

“What do we do?”

“Preserve everything.”

“The original footage.”

“The messages.”

“The medical records.”

“Anything showing Lily was ill.”

“Do not communicate emotionally.”

“Do not respond to Chloe.”

“Do not threaten Adrian.”

I nodded.

Then I remembered something.

The house had cameras.

Lots of them.

Adrian had installed them years ago.

I had never touched the system.

But my father had once taught me enough about digital security to retrieve archived data.

I opened my laptop.

There was one problem.

I didn't have access.

Then I remembered an old administrator account.

My father had created it for me when I was twenty-one.

I entered the credentials.

The system opened.

And everything changed.

There were cameras everywhere.

Kitchen.

Dining room.

Hallway.

Living room.

Garden.

Entrance.

And the recording from the night I left.

The unedited footage.

I watched it once.

Then twice.

Then I called my lawyer.

“We have the truth.”

“What?”

“The original footage.”

“What does it show?”

I looked at Lily.

“Everything.”

That was when I stopped being frightened.

Not because I knew we were safe.

Because I finally had proof that we were right.

But Adrian's plan went deeper.

The next day I discovered a second file.

CUSTODY STRATEGY — PHASE TWO.

Inside were financial documents.

They intended to freeze my accounts.

They intended to remove me from several investments.

They intended to convince the court that I had no stable income.

They had no idea that the woman they were trying to bankrupt owned more than they could imagine.

Because I had spent three years hiding my real identity.

And now I was about to stop hiding.
