Chapter 3 - THE HEIR THEY NEVER KNEW

I had never told Adrian how much money my family actually controlled.

When we met at university, I had used my mother's maiden name.

I rented a small apartment.

I drove an old car.

I dressed simply.

I wanted to know whether someone could love me without seeing the number attached to my family name.

Adrian seemed to.

Or at least, I believed he did.

My father owned Mercer Global, a private investment group with interests in technology, healthcare, real estate, and energy.

My personal trust held controlling shares.

I had never touched them.

My father once told me:

“Money should give you freedom, not become your personality.”

So I walked away.

Now that choice seemed naïve.

Mr. Hale, my father's former head of security, found me the next morning.

He stood outside the hotel.

“You're ready.”

“For what?”

“To stop pretending.”

He handed me a black folder.

Inside were documents confirming my ownership.

I stared at them.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“You own fifty-four percent of Mercer Global.”

I closed the folder.

“My father transferred it?”

“Years ago.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He wanted you to build your own life first.”

I looked at Lily sleeping beside me.

“He didn't expect this.”

“No.”

Mr. Hale gave me another document.

Adrian's financial connections.

Chloe's consulting company.

Payments.

Wire transfers.

And something even worse.

Adrian had been using my marital assets as collateral.

He had secretly transferred millions.

He thought he was stealing from an ordinary wife.

Instead, he had been making fraudulent transfers against assets controlled by Mercer Global.

That meant the consequences would be enormous.

I called the company's general counsel.

Arthur Reed answered.

“Mara?”

“Yes.”

“I need a full forensic audit.”

“Of what?”

“Everything connected to Adrian Mercer.”

There was silence.

Then:

“Does he know who you are?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“I want every account frozen.”

“Done.”

“I want every transfer preserved.”

“Already moving.”

“And I want the original family trust documents.”

Arthur paused.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Within hours, the old Mercer legal machine activated.

Banks received notices.

Investment accounts were frozen.

Corporate access was suspended.

A private investigator was assigned.

Digital forensics began retrieving evidence.

Adrian's world was changing.

He just didn't know it yet.

Meanwhile, my lawyer filed a response to his custody petition.

Attached:

Medical records proving Lily had been sick that night.

The original security footage.

Messages from Chloe.

The unedited audio.

And evidence of Adrian's financial misconduct.

We didn't release anything publicly.

Not yet.

I wanted the truth to speak in the right room first.

Then Chloe made another mistake.

She uploaded another video.

This time, it was worse.

She stood beside Adrian and mocked me.

“She thinks money can save her.”

The caption read:

“Some women need to learn their place.”

I watched it.

Then smiled.

She had no idea.

Three days later, the Mercer Foundation announced its annual gala.

Every major business figure in the city would attend.

Adrian's company was one of the sponsors.

And my name was on the guest list.

I decided to go.
