Chapter 25 - GRACE MEETS EVELYN

Grace was twenty-three when she requested a meeting.

Evelyn was fifty-four.

Neutral café.

I did not attend.

Grace told me afterward.

She asked:

“Did you really think marrying Dad made Mom’s things yours?”

Evelyn answered:

“No. I thought marrying him should make me important enough that everyone would stop separating them from me.”

Honest.

Then:

“Why the locket?”

Evelyn:

“Because you were the one person I couldn’t persuade.”

Grace was quiet.

Then:

“I was four.”

Evelyn cried.

“I know.”

No friendship followed.

No need.
