Chapter 18 - ISABELLE’S THINGS

Therapy taught me something uncomfortable.

I had preserved too many objects myself.

Not because Grace asked.

Because I feared change.

Evelyn’s reaction was abusive.

My own attachment was not automatically healthy simply because hers was worse.

So Harrington and I reviewed the household items.

Did Grace need seventeen photographs?

No.

Could some go into archive storage?

Yes.

Did the breakfast-room painting need to remain forever?

No.

Could I redecorate?

Apparently.

The dead do not require interior control.

That distinction mattered.

We could let the house change without letting anyone erase Isabelle.
