Chapter 17 - THE SECOND BOX

Two years later, a package arrived from the prison archives.
Inside was Claire's final confession.
She had written it after learning that her appeals were over.
I almost threw it away.
Instead, I opened it.
She admitted she had orchestrated the fraud.
She admitted she had threatened Emily.
She admitted she had manipulated Daniel.
But then came one unexpected revelation.
She had never ordered the crash.
She claimed someone else had made the final decision.
I brought the letter to Harris.
He reopened the file.
The signature on the old ambulance dispatch had been forged.
A new investigation began.
And the name that surfaced was the retired supervisor's former partner.
The man who had disappeared after Emily's death.
He was alive.
Living under another name.
We found him in Oregon.
He confessed.
He had delayed the ambulance because Claire promised him protection.
But he also revealed something no one expected.
Emily had been alive for nearly forty minutes after the crash.
She had given a final statement to a paramedic before the supervisor arrived.
The statement had been erased.
The paramedic had kept a handwritten copy.
Her last words were:
“Tell Ethan to choose Sophie.”
Nothing about Claire.
Nothing about money.
Nothing about revenge.
Only Sophie.
I went home that night and sat outside my daughter's room.
She was fourteen now.
Older than Emily had been when she started her first job.
I looked at her sleeping face and finally understood.
Emily had known exactly what mattered.
Not the company.
Not the money.
Not the case.
Sophie.
The child.
The future.
The life after the fire.
I closed the door softly.
Behind me, Nora was waiting.
“She said the same thing,” I told her.
Nora nodded.
“Then listen.”
I smiled.
May you like
“I am.”
