Chapter 12 - THE NECKLACE

Emily's necklace was a small silver pendant shaped like a compass.
I had given it to her on our fifth anniversary.
The pendant disappeared after her death.
Now we knew someone else had worn it.
We checked surveillance near the crash site.
A woman appeared in the background.
Dark hair.
Long coat.
Silver necklace.
Harris enlarged the image.
The woman was Claire's younger sister, Elise.
Everyone had assumed Elise left Chicago years earlier.
She hadn't.
She had been living under another name.
When detectives found her, she confessed quickly.
“I never meant for Emily to die,” she said.
“Why did you follow her?”
“Claire told me she was stealing money from us.”
“Did you believe her?”
“Yes.”
Elise had been manipulated by Claire for years.
She helped monitor Emily.
She helped track the company accounts.
She was also the woman who took the jewelry box after Emily's funeral.
But she hadn't known what was inside.
Claire had kept the box hidden.
Until the wedding.
“Why did Claire bring it to the wedding?” I asked.
Elise looked frightened.
“Because she knew Sophie was starting to remember.”
That sentence shook me.
“What did she remember?”
“Emily hiding something in the box.”
I looked at the silver key.
Elise shook her head.
“There is another compartment.”
We returned to the jewelry box.
This time, we removed the brass clasp.
A second compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny cassette tape.
No one in the room spoke.
We found an old player.
Emily's voice filled the room.
“This is my final statement.”
She explained everything.
Claire had created the fraud network with Victor.
Daniel's father had helped move funds.
My father had discovered it and tried to contain it.
Mara and Emily wanted to expose it.
Claire ordered them silenced.
But Emily had one final secret.
She had copied the master ledger to a server no one knew existed.
The ledger could identify every account.
At the end of the tape, Emily gave one instruction.
“Ethan, the ledger is where we first met.”
I stared at Daniel.
“Our first apartment.”
Exactly.
We searched the old apartment.
Behind the kitchen cabinet, we found a tiny hard drive.
The master ledger.
Every name.
Every payment.
Every cover-up.
And one final name I never expected.
May you like
Claire's mother.
