Chapter 11 - MY FATHER'S LAST MISTAKE
I spent the night staring at my father's signature.
He had added Claire as a beneficiary.
Why?
The answer came from an old legal file.
Claire had blackmailed him.
She threatened to expose Project Harbor and destroy his company.
He agreed to the policy change as a temporary payment.
But Emily discovered the document.
She realized Claire had turned my father's secret into leverage.
My father's final mistake was believing Claire would stop once she had enough money.
She never did.

Harris obtained a warrant for Claire's records.
We found a payment to a driver named Owen Price.
Owen had disappeared after Emily's crash.
We found him in another state.
He agreed to talk.
He confessed to following Emily's car.
“But I didn't kill her,” he said.
“Who did?”
He shook his head.
“I never saw the driver.”
“Then why were you there?”
“Claire paid me to make her afraid.”
“And the crash?”
“It wasn't planned.”
The investigation had found that Emily's brakes failed after she tried to escape.
Owen insisted he hadn't touched the car.
Then he remembered one thing.
“Someone was waiting at the scene.”
“Who?”
“A woman.”
“What did she look like?”
“Dark hair. Long coat.”
Sophie heard the description and whispered, “The woman from the picture.”
We showed her photos.
She pointed to one.
My mother.
I felt sick.
Mom denied it.
“I was never there.”
But the photograph metadata placed her phone near the crash site.
She finally broke.
“I went because Emily called me.”
“What happened?”
“She was alive.”
I closed my eyes.
“What did you do?”
“I tried to help her.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
Mom whispered the answer.
“Because Claire arrived before the ambulance.”
She covered her face.
“She told me if I spoke, Sophie would disappear.”
Then Mom looked at me.
“I should have told you anyway.”
She was right.
But there was something else.
“Who was the woman with Claire?”
Mom stared at me.
“I don't know.”
