Chapter 16 - THE LIFE AFTER THE LIES

A year passed.
The headlines faded.
Claire's appeals failed.
Victor accepted a plea deal.
Daniel testified until the last document was explained.
Elise moved away and started over.
The company was sold.
The recovered money was placed into a trust for victims of financial crimes.
I could have rebuilt Emily's company.
Instead, I sold everything and started a smaller business.
Something quiet.
Something clean.
Something no one could use as a weapon.
Sophie started taking piano lessons.
She hated scales.
She loved the songs that came after them.
One afternoon, she asked me to take her to Emily's grave.
We brought wildflowers.
She sat beside the stone.
“Mommy,” she said, “Daddy isn't sad all the time anymore.”
I laughed.
“I'm glad you noticed.”
“She would be happy.”
“I think so.”
Then Sophie stood.
“I made a decision.”
“What decision?”
“When I grow up, I'm not going to work in a company.”
“Good.”
“I want to be a teacher.”
“Why?”
“Because teachers don't have secret boxes.”
I laughed so hard I almost cried.
A few months later, I met someone.
Her name was Nora.
She wasn't interested in the story.
She didn't ask how much money I had.
She didn't ask whether I was famous.
She asked why Sophie hated broccoli.
That was the first sign that she was safe.
We became friends first.
Then something more.
I was terrified.
Not of her.
Of losing again.
Nora never pushed.
One night, I told her everything.
She listened.
When I finished, she asked one question.
“Do you still love Emily?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
I stared at her.
She smiled.
“You should.”
That was the moment I understood something important.
Love was not a room with one chair.
Emily could remain part of my life without owning all of it.
I could remember her and still build something new.
The next morning, Sophie found us making pancakes.
She looked at Nora.
Then at me.
Then she smiled.
“Finally.”
Nora laughed.
“What does that mean?”
Sophie shrugged.
“Daddy needed someone who likes pancakes.”
May you like
For the first time in years, our house sounded like a family again.
