Chapter 14 - THE DAY CLAIRE BROKE

The courtroom was packed.

Claire entered in a dark suit with her lawyer beside her.

She looked at me without blinking.

For months, she had built her defense around one idea: I was emotional, obsessed, and unreliable.

Then the ledger appeared on the evidence screen.

Every account.

Every transfer.

Every date.

Claire's expression changed.

Her lawyer leaned toward her.

She whispered something.

He shook his head.

She whispered again.

This time, he moved away from her.

Claire realized she was alone.

The prosecutor played Emily's recording.

Then Mara's recovered notes.

Then the security footage.

Finally, Sophie was allowed to testify through a protected room about what she remembered from the night Emily died.

She didn't identify Claire directly.

She didn't need to.

She remembered the silver ring.

The orange scent.

The voice.

And the phrase the woman had used.

“Close the door. He cannot know.”

Claire's lawyer objected.

The judge allowed it.

Claire turned toward me.

For one second, her mask disappeared.

“I was trying to protect everyone,” she whispered.

I answered quietly.

“You were protecting yourself.”

She shook her head.

“No. You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

She looked at Daniel.

He wouldn't meet her eyes.

She looked at Elise.

Elise was crying.

Then Claire looked at me.

“I loved your sister.”

“Which sister?”

She flinched.

“Emily.”

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

Claire continued.

“I hated what she knew. I hated that she was going to expose me. But I loved her.”

I felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not pity.

Just exhaustion.

The prosecutor asked the final question.

“Did you order the destruction of evidence after Emily's death?”

Claire said nothing.

“Did you threaten members of her family?”

Silence.

“Did you participate in a plan to conceal financial fraud and obstruct the investigation into Emily Carter's death?”

Claire closed her eyes.

Then she said the words that ended her defense.

“Yes.”

Daniel covered his face.

Elise sobbed.

I sat perfectly still.

For three years, I had wanted to hear someone admit the truth.

When it finally came, it didn't feel like victory.

It felt like a door opening.

May you like

And behind it was a life I hadn't known how to imagine.
