Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING

Maya had arrived prepared.

She had secretly recorded the conversation.

Richard didn't realize.

Every confession.

Every admission.

Every statement about Eleanor.

Every explanation for hiding the twins.

Everything.

The recording was transmitted directly to federal investigators.

Richard eventually realized.

He lunged toward Maya.

Eleanor stepped between them.

“Don't touch my daughter.”

Richard stopped.

Your daughter.

The words seemed to change the room.

For twenty-five years, Maya had been a secret.

Now she was standing beside her mother.

Not beneath her.

Not behind her.

Beside her.

The police arrived.

Richard was arrested.

The investigation uncovered years of fraud.

He had manipulated banks.

Shell companies.

Investors.

The board.

Even Chloe.

Chloe had believed she was the heir.

She had never known the truth.

When she learned everything, she broke down.

“I thought you loved me.”

Richard looked at her.

“You were useful.”

That sentence destroyed her.

Eleanor watched.

She didn't celebrate.

Because Chloe was still her daughter.

Her first daughter.

The child she had raised.

The child she loved.

Even though she had inherited some of Richard's worst habits.

Eleanor walked to Chloe.

“I should have told you I loved you more.”

Chloe cried.

“I wasn't good enough.”

“That was never the problem.”

“What was?”

“Your father taught you that love had a price.”

Eleanor touched her face.

“It doesn't.”

Chloe looked at Maya.

“I'm sorry.”

Maya nodded.

“I know.”

It wasn't forgiveness.

May you like

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.
