Chapter 3 - THE HEIR THEY HID

Eleanor spent the entire night reading the Vance family trust documents.
She found the clause Sarah had mentioned.
The original family charter stated that if a second biological child was born and later confirmed, the child would hold equal inheritance rights.
Richard had hidden Maya because he wanted Chloe to inherit everything.
But there was more.
The family technology division had been placed into a protected trust.
The trustee had authority to transfer voting rights to the biological heirs.
If Maya was confirmed as Eleanor's daughter, the balance of power inside Vance Holdings would change.
Chloe would no longer control the succession.
She would have to share.
And the current board hated uncertainty.
Eleanor understood why someone had searched the archive.
They knew.
Maybe they had known for years.
She called Maya into her office.
“Sit down.”
Maya looked nervous.
“I think I know where you came from.”
Maya stared.
Eleanor pushed the hospital record toward her.
“Your mother, Sarah, was not your biological mother.”
Maya's face turned pale.
“What?”
“Your biological mother is me.”
Silence.
Maya stared at Eleanor.
Then laughed nervously.
“That's impossible.”
“I wish it were.”
Eleanor explained everything.
The twins.
The altered records.
Sarah.
Richard.
The hidden trust.
Maya listened without speaking.
Then she asked:
“Why didn't you come for me?”
Eleanor's voice broke.
“I didn't know.”
“So you didn't abandon me.”
“No.”
“Someone told you I died.”
“Yes.”
Maya covered her mouth.
She began to cry.
Eleanor wanted to hug her.
But stopped.
Maya had spent twenty-five years without her.
She deserved the choice.
Finally, Maya stepped forward.
Eleanor embraced her.
For the first time, the woman Eleanor had thought of as a mysterious housekeeper became her daughter.
But their reunion lasted only minutes.
Margaret burst in.
“Mrs. Vance.”
“What?”
“Chloe knows.”
Eleanor's stomach dropped.
“How?”
“She saw the medical records.”
“Where is she?”
“Downstairs.”
Eleanor and Maya went to the main hall.
Chloe stood beside the staircase.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were filled with disbelief.
“Is it true?”
Eleanor nodded.
Chloe looked at Maya.
“You're my sister.”
Maya didn't answer.
Chloe laughed.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.”
Eleanor stepped toward her.
“Chloe—”
“You spent twenty-five years lying to me.”
“I didn't know.”
“You knew eventually.”
“I found out yesterday.”
Chloe looked devastated.
Then her expression changed.
“What happens to my inheritance?”
Eleanor stared.
“My daughter just found out who she is, and the first thing you ask about is money.”
Chloe's face hardened.
“Because money is why she was hidden!”
“That is exactly what I'm trying to prevent.”
“You are giving half of everything to a stranger.”
Eleanor looked at Maya.
“She is not a stranger.”
“She is my sister.”
Chloe's voice trembled.
“No.”
“She is the daughter my father stole.”
Maya spoke quietly.
“I don't want your life.”
Chloe laughed.
“You don't have to.”
“The law will give it to you.”
That night, Chloe left the mansion.
She did not return.
By morning, the financial markets were already reacting.
Someone had leaked rumors about a secret heir.
Vance Holdings shares dropped.
The board demanded an emergency meeting.
And in the middle of the chaos, one person called Eleanor.
The caller was the chairman of the board.
His voice was cold.
“Mrs. Vance, we need to discuss your daughter.”
“Which one?”
“The new heir.”
He paused.
“There are people who believe Maya Collins should never have existed.”
Eleanor felt ice move through her veins.
“Who?”
“People who were involved when your husband buried the original birth records.”
“Names.”
“I'll give them to you.”
Then the line went dead.
Minutes later, Eleanor received an anonymous photograph.
It showed Maya walking to work.
Someone had been following her.
May you like
On the back was written:
The second daughter should have stayed dead.
