Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Richard Vance had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
Heart failure.
Private funeral.
Medical certificate.
Everything official.
But the acquisition documents contained his signature.
Eleanor's hands shook.
“This can't be.”
Arthur Vance, the family's outside counsel, stepped forward.
“Mrs. Vance, I think you need to see something.”
He opened a folder.
Inside were transfers from accounts Eleanor had never known existed.
Payments made after Richard's death.
Assets sold.
Companies acquired.
And photographs.
Richard.
Alive.
Older.
Standing outside a private estate in Switzerland.
Eleanor stared.
“He's alive.”
Maya looked at her.
“Your husband?”
Eleanor nodded.
“He stole my life.”
“But why?”
Arthur answered.
“To control the company.”
“Then why let everyone believe he was dead?”
“Because a dead man can move money without raising questions.”
The plan became clear.
Richard had built a secret network.
He had hidden Maya to control the inheritance.
He had allowed Eleanor to believe he was dead.
Meanwhile, he continued controlling assets through shell companies.
The hostile acquisition was the final phase.
He intended to regain Vance Holdings.
Eleanor suddenly realized something.
The lonely feeling she had carried for twenty-five years had never been imaginary.
Something inside her had always sensed that the family story didn't make sense.
Richard had stolen a child.
Stolen money.
Stolen truth.
And now he was coming back for the company.
A private investigator located the Swiss estate.
Eleanor decided to go.
Maya insisted on coming.
“You're my mother.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“Yes.”
“And I want to help.”
For the first time, Eleanor smiled.
“Then we go together.”
They flew to Switzerland.
The estate stood above a lake.
Elegant.
Isolated.
Beautiful.
And at the front door stood Richard.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Eleanor stopped.
Richard smiled.
“My love.”
Her voice was cold.
“You're dead.”
“I changed my mind.”
“You stole my daughter.”
“I protected the family.”
“You stole twenty-five years.”
“You had Chloe.”
“I had a daughter.”
“Now you have two.”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
“You have a problem.”
Maya stepped forward.
“I'm not your problem.”
Richard looked at her.
“You are my greatest mistake.”
Eleanor's expression changed.
“What do you mean?”
May you like
Richard smiled.
“Because I never expected you to survive.”
