Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM

The emergency board meeting was held at noon.

Eleanor entered the room with Maya beside her.

Every director turned.

Some stared at Maya.

Others avoided looking at her entirely.

The chairman stood.

“Mrs. Vance, this is highly unusual.”

“So is discovering your company has spent twenty-five years hiding a shareholder.”

Whispers filled the room.

Maya remained silent.

The chairman turned toward her.

“Miss Collins, do you understand what your appearance means?”

“No.”

“It means the existing inheritance structure may be invalid.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Not invalid.”

“Corrected.”

The chairman's jaw tightened.

“Your daughter has no corporate experience.”

“She doesn't need to.”

“She could disrupt the company.”

“Perhaps.”

“She could destroy shareholder confidence.”

Eleanor looked around the room.

“Or perhaps the people who fear her have something to hide.”

Silence.

Then the board's legal counsel entered.

He carried a sealed document.

“Mrs. Vance.”

“What?”

“We found the original trust.”

“Where?”

“In your husband's private records.”

“And?”

He looked nervous.

“The trust confirms Maya's inheritance.”

Chloe entered the boardroom.

She had heard everything.

“You're giving her half.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

Chloe stared at her.

“You're destroying what Dad built.”

“No.”

“I'm correcting what he broke.”

Chloe looked at Maya.

“You don't even know this company.”

Maya finally spoke.

“No.”

“But I know what it feels like to have nothing.”

The room became quiet.

“And I know what it feels like to work for every dollar.”

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“You think being poor makes you morally superior?”

“No.”

“I think being loved does.”

The sentence stunned everyone.

Maya continued.

“Sarah raised me.”

“She didn't have money.”

“She didn't have a mansion.”

“She didn't have private schools.”

“But she taught me to be kind.”

“She taught me not to judge people by what they own.”

Eleanor looked at Maya.

Pride filled her chest.

Then the chairman interrupted.

“This is emotional.”

Eleanor turned.

“Your company has been emotionally manipulated for decades.”

The chairman frowned.

“How?”

“By my late husband.”

“By people who hid the truth.”

“By people who believed wealth gave them the right to decide who belonged.”

She placed the trust on the table.

“We are changing that.”

The board voted.

The result was close.

But Maya received her legal inheritance.

Chloe retained her share.

Eleanor remained chairwoman.

The corporate structure changed.

And the Vance family officially acknowledged both daughters.

For one moment, it seemed the worst was over.

Then the chairman's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What happened?” Eleanor asked.

He lowered the phone.

“Someone has launched a hostile acquisition attempt.”

“Who?”

A company nobody recognized.

But its ownership structure led back to one name.

Richard Vance.

Eleanor froze.

May you like

Her dead husband's name.

Impossible.
