Chapter 15 - The Clean Floor

Six months later, Ridgewell Systems reopened its twenty-ninth floor under a different name: the Avery Center for Records Integrity. The plaque did not call Claire a martyr. It called her a data-assurance manager who reported discrepancies and was not protected when she should have been. Malcolm liked the precision of it.

The company had a new chief executive, an interim board with three independent directors, and a compliance department that reported directly to Priya Nand. Lydia Crane awaited trial for procurement fraud and evidence tampering. Graham Sloane had entered a cooperation agreement that required him to testify about the payments he had authorized. Their names remained in the investigation because accountability was not the same as erasure.

Eli kept his position, though he refused the corner office offered after the first public hearing. He finished his degree at night and became the youngest member of Ridgewell's records review team. He still checked the locks twice before leaving. Courage had not made him fearless. It had made fear less decisive.

Daniela visited the Avery Center on its opening day. She stood beneath the plaque with one hand over her mouth, then placed Claire's original report in the archive. The report was scanned, indexed, and stored in three locations where no executive could quietly make it disappear.

Malcolm left Ridgewell the following spring. On his last morning, he polished the lobby floor before sunrise. The marble caught the pale gold light. The old stain was gone, though he knew exactly where it had been.

Eli met him beside the clock. "You could stay on as an adviser."

"I could."

"Will you?"

Malcolm looked at the revolving doors, at the people moving through them, at the young employees who now paused to read the safety notices posted beside the elevators. "No. Someone else should learn what a clean floor is worth."

He handed Eli the brass key Claire had left behind. It was no longer needed to open a hidden cabinet. It belonged in the archive, beside the report and the record of every person who had chosen silence or truth.

As Malcolm stepped outside, the city smelled of rain and stone. Behind him, the lobby lights came on one by one. Eli stayed by the doors, watching everyone who entered, asking names when names were needed, and refusing to look away.

For the first time since Claire's death, Malcolm heard the building tell the truth.
