Chapter 14 - What Courage Costs

Ridgewell's new counsel offered Eli a permanent position in ethics and compliance. The salary would have paid his mother's overdue bills and allowed him to finish school without taking another night shift.

He sat with Daniela in a quiet diner across from the courthouse. Steam fogged the window. Trucks groaned through puddles outside.

"You do not have to become the company to prove it was wrong," Daniela said.

"I know."

"And you do not owe Malcolm your future."

"I know that too."

Eli accepted the position, but only after the board agreed to publish the investigation, protect whistleblowers, and separate compliance from operations. He insisted that his mother receive a full hearing rather than a private settlement. Ridgewell restored her professional record and paid the wages it had withheld, though no payment could return the years fear had taken from her.

The board adopted a public list of corrective actions. It was not a promise hidden in a press release. It was signed, dated, and assigned to named officers.

Restore original incident records and preserve every audit trail.

Create an independent reporting channel outside executive operations.

Protect employees who report safety or procurement violations.

Publish the findings and review executive accountability annually.

Malcolm read the list in the lobby while a crew replaced the damaged marble tile beneath the clock. The coffee stain had been buffed away, but the stone still held a faint amber shadow if the light struck it from the side.

Priya approached him without an entourage. "We would like you to advise the new oversight committee."

"I am a janitor."

"You are the person who found the truth."

"Those are different jobs."

"Perhaps Ridgewell needs to stop pretending they are."

Malcolm looked toward the revolving doors. For the first time, people entering the building looked at him before looking past him.

Then a courier delivered a sealed envelope bearing Claire's name.
