Malcolm Avery was the older janitor most people at Ridgewell Systems barely noticed. That Tuesday morning, he was finishing the marble floor in the company's main lobby when Lydia Crane walked through the doors carrying coffee.

Federal investigators arrived before sunset. They did not rush. They photographed the concealed server room, copied the procurement ledger, and asked every executive the same question in slightly different ways. By midnight, Ridgewell's stock had fallen eleven percent, and the company's public statement had been replaced by a notice acknowledging an independent investigation.

Graham Sloane resigned before the board could remove him. Lydia did not. She remained in the conference room for six hours, insisting that she had protected Ridgewell from collapse and that every decision had been made under executive instruction.

"You were afraid of losing your position," Priya said.

"I was afraid of losing thousands of jobs."

"You began by humiliating a janitor and ended by falsifying public safety records."

Lydia's eyes moved to Malcolm. "He was never only a janitor."

"Neither were you only an executive," Malcolm replied. "You made choices."

The external investigators found no evidence that Lydia had arranged Claire's collision. They did find evidence that she had directed surveillance, destroyed records, threatened Daniela, manipulated regulators, and concealed payments benefiting her brother. The distinction mattered legally, but it did not rescue her.

The board terminated Lydia for cause and referred the procurement scheme for criminal review. Peter Crane's company was frozen. The security director who had stolen the capsule confessed to taking orders from Lydia. Tomas Reed was reinstated long enough to give a formal statement, then retired with his pension protected.

Helena Voss resigned as board chair and accepted responsibility for failing to act on Claire's report. Priya Nand became interim chair and announced that the board would publish the investigation's findings, including its own failures.

When Malcolm signed his statement, the investigator asked how he had known Eli was the witness Claire described.

"He told the truth when nobody important was asking him to," Malcolm said.
