Chapter 12 - The Door That Opened

The alarm was false. Security confirmed it within three minutes, but those three minutes were enough for someone to enter the witness room and remove Daniela's folder. The corridor cameras had been disabled from the concealed server room.

Lydia blamed Malcolm. Sloane blamed a systems contractor. Priya blamed the board's dependence on the same security chain that had failed to protect the evidence.

Eli stood in the center of the conference room, white-faced. "The copied file is not enough. They can say the timestamps were altered."

"Then we use the source," Malcolm said.

He took a folded maintenance checklist from his jacket. It was the ordinary sort used to record lights, locks, and water pressure. On the back, Claire had written a sequence of numbers in pencil. Malcolm had assumed they were an access code. Eli recognized them as a checksum used by his mother to verify scanned records.

Together, they entered the sequence into the copy of the Morrow file. A hidden directory opened. It contained the complete voice recording and a second set of emails, preserved in an automatic backup that no one had known existed.

Claire's voice returned, clearer this time.

"Lydia knows the reports are false. Graham told her the public contract would collapse if the failures were disclosed. He promised to protect her brother's company and said the board would accept a controlled loss. If I disappear, the order came from the executive floor."

The final email was from Lydia to Sloane, sent six hours before Claire's crash: I WILL HANDLE THE FATHER. HE HAS NO ACCESS AND NO CREDIBILITY. IF HE TAKES A JOB IN THE LOBBY, WE WILL KNOW WHAT HE FINDS.

The conference room fell silent.

Lydia looked at Malcolm. "I did not order anyone to kill her."

"You ordered people to watch her," Malcolm said.

"I ordered a compliance review."

"You called my daughter a problem to be contained."

Sloane turned toward the door. "This meeting is over."

Jonah Bell stood between him and the exit. "Not yet."

Priya pressed another button. The locks engaged throughout the executive floor.

"The board has voted to suspend both of you pending an external investigation," she said. "And this time, the records will leave the building."

Lydia reached for her phone. It had already been disconnected.
