Malcolm Avery was the older janitor most people at Ridgewell Systems barely noticed. That Tuesday morning, he was finishing the marble floor in the company's main lobby when Lydia Crane walked through the doors carrying coffee.

The attorneys argued over admissibility while the directors argued over liability. Jonah Bell asked why Ridgewell's internal audit had not detected the payments. Priya answered that the audit team had been denied access to the restricted procurement ledger.

Helena Voss said nothing until Malcolm turned to her.

"You received Claire's report," he said.

Helena's hands rested flat on the table. "Yes."

Eli looked at her. "When?"

"The afternoon before the collision."

The room seemed to contract around that admission. Helena explained that Sloane had told her the report was preliminary and that releasing it would trigger a regulatory investigation before the board understood the technical details. She had instructed counsel to preserve the file and wait forty-eight hours.

"Forty-eight hours became eighteen months," Priya said.

"I was told the report was fabricated by a disgruntled employee."

"You did not verify that."

"No."

Helena's voice broke on the word, not from tears but from the recognition that she had mistaken caution for neutrality. Her failure had not created the scheme, but it had given the scheme room to survive.

Malcolm placed a small brass key on the table. "Claire believed the original records were stored in a concealed server room. The room was built during the renovation approved by this board."

Sloane objected. "A server room is not a crime."

"No," Priya said. "But deleting the access logs may be."

The outside attorney connected the copied file to the screen. A series of messages appeared between Sloane, Lydia, and Peter Crane. In one, Sloane wrote: KEEP THE LOBBY MAN UNDER OBSERVATION. HE KNOWS THE OLD ROUTES.

Eli stared at Malcolm. "They knew you were looking from the beginning."

"They knew I was looking," Malcolm said. "They did not know what I had found."

Another message appeared, dated the morning after Claire's death: IF MERCER'S DAUGHTER EVER RETURNS, CLOSE THE LOOP.
