Chapter 8 - Robert Loses the ElectionThe suspension was lifted.

Robert returned as sheriff.
Everyone expected him to win reelection easily.
Hero sheriff.
Corruption whistleblower.
Father who saved his child.
The campaign advertisements practically wrote themselves.
Robert hated them.
One consultant suggested using the image of the broken chain.
He fired the consultant.
Emma was not campaign material.
Then Robert did something nobody expected.
He withdrew from the election.
Marcus stared at him.
“You’re serious?”
“Yes.”
“You’d win.”
“Probably.”
“Then why?”
Robert looked toward the sheriff’s office.
For nineteen years, the badge had defined him.
He loved the work.
But something had changed.
Not fear.
Perspective.
He wanted to rebuild the department’s evidence systems.
Create independent oversight.
Then leave before the office became something he believed belonged to him.
Marcus eventually ran.
Won.
Robert spent his remaining months creating:
External evidence audits.
Restricted GPS access.
Mandatory conflict disclosures.
Independent reporting channels.
No one officer could quietly manipulate the systems Vance had abused.
On Robert’s last day, Marcus handed him his old badge.
“Keep it.”
Robert smiled.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“It belongs to the office.”
Then he went home.
Emma was sitting on the porch.
For the first time in almost two years.
No chain.
No fear.
Just her blue camera.
Robert sat beside her.
“You’re home early.”
“Permanent schedule change.”
She frowned.
“Did you get fired?”
He laughed.
“No.”
“Good.”
Then she handed him the camera.
“Look.”
A photograph of a hawk.
Blurry.
Robert studied it.
“Terrible.”
Emma gasped.
“You’re supposed to say perfect.”
“I’m retired. Standards changed.”
She shoved him.
May you like
He laughed.
For once, being home early did not mean finding an emergency.
