Panicked when she saw black clipboards.

Time helped.
Robert learned that wanting his daughter “back to normal” was the wrong goal.
She had experienced something abnormal.
Healing did not mean pretending otherwise.
Diana accepted a plea before trial.
Reynolds too.
Pendleton cooperated on financial charges.
Vance went before a jury.
Emma did not have to testify.
The video and other evidence were strong.
But she asked to.
Robert said no.
At first.
Emma crossed her arms.
“You always say telling the truth matters.”
“That doesn’t mean you owe a courtroom your pain.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
She looked at him.
“Because he said nobody would care what I said.”
Robert stopped.
So Emma testified through child-friendly procedures.
No theatrics.
No harsh cross-examination.
She explained taking pictures.
Hearing adults talk.
Running.
Diana catching her.
The chain.
The heat.
Then the prosecutor asked:
“What did Mrs. Harrington tell you?”
Emma answered:
“She said Daddy would get angry and prove he was dangerous.”
“And were you afraid of your father?”
“No.”
“Who were you afraid of?”
Emma looked toward Vance.
“The grown-ups who thought rules meant they could do anything.”
Robert closed his eyes.
His daughter was nine.
And somehow understood power better than many adults.
Vance was convicted on corruption, evidence tampering, conspiracy, obstruction, and serious charges tied to the deliberate endangerment of Emma.
The sentence meant decades.
Diana received substantial prison time.
Reynolds lost his badge permanently and served a shorter sentence through cooperation.
Pendleton’s corporate empire collapsed under federal and state fraud cases.
The reservoir project was cancelled.
The contaminated land entered remediation instead.
