Vance was gone.
Pendleton was not.
He was arrested with two suitcases containing nearly $900,000 cash.
His laptop contained the rest.
County Judge Malcolm Price.
Regional water commissioner Steven Bell.
Two state lobbyists.
Three private investors.
Not everyone knew about Emma.
Most apparently did not.
That distinction mattered.
The land fraud involved a network.
The attack on Emma involved a smaller group:
Vance.
Diana.
Reynolds.
Pendleton knew they planned to “neutralize Ramirez,” but evidence did not establish that he knew a child would be physically restrained beforehand.
Robert wanted everyone equally guilty.
Catherine Ross did not allow it.
“Evidence decides.”
Robert hated hearing that.
He also knew she was right.
Then Pendleton offered something.
Vance had a second set of records.
Copies of original contaminated-soil results.
Insurance.
Leverage against his partners.
Stored somewhere nobody would search.
Oakridge Estates.
Inside the vacant house across from Robert.
The same house used to film him.
State agents searched it.
Behind an electrical panel they found a waterproof case.
Original sample logs.
Bank transfers.
Commission agreements.
A flash drive.
And one audio recording.
Vance speaking to Diana.
“If the kid talks?”
Diana answered:
“She won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because by the time Ramirez gets home, she’ll either be too sick to explain…”
Pause.
“…or he’ll be too angry for anyone to care what she says.”
Robert stopped listening.
He walked outside.
Emma’s heart monitor had saved her.
Ironically, the condition Diana tried to exploit had alerted Robert early enough to prevent something worse.
But that was luck.
