Chapter 9 - The Warehouse

The warehouse was surrounded by police.
Tactical units waited outside.
Maya stood beside Alexander.
I remained with the security team.
The plan was simple.
Contain the building.
Preserve the evidence.
Capture Edward alive.
Inside, cameras revealed movement.
One person.
Then another.
A figure entered the archive room.
Edward.
He carried a metal case.
Maya whispered:
“Go.”
The doors opened.
Officers entered.
Edward attempted to escape through the loading bay.
He was stopped.
He looked at Alexander.
“Your father would be ashamed.”
Alexander stared.
“My father is dead.”
“Exactly.”
Edward smiled.
“He never understood how this family worked.”
“No.”
Alexander shook his head.
“He understood.”
“You simply refused to.”
Edward laughed.
“You think you're different?”
“I am.”
“You built the same empire.”
“But I won't destroy people to keep it.”
Edward's smile disappeared.
Maya placed him under arrest.
The metal case was opened.
Inside were original trust documents.
Bank records.
A list of payments.
And photographs proving the entire conspiracy.
There was no longer any way to deny it.
As Edward was taken away, he looked at Alexander.
“You'll lose everything.”
Alexander answered quietly:
“Maybe.”
“But I won't lose myself.”
The case became one of the largest financial scandals in the family's history.
The Whitmore board removed every person involved.
The trust was restructured.
Independent oversight was established.
Vanessa entered a plea agreement and cooperated.
Julian was sentenced.
Cynthia lost her financial interests.
Dr. Reed surrendered his medical license.
Benjamin Cole was disbarred.
Edward faced multiple counts.
And Eleanor returned home.
Not to the old mansion.
She didn't want it.
She wanted something smaller.
Something peaceful.
Alexander sold part of the estate.
The funds were transferred into a family foundation.
Scholarships.
Women's shelters.
Medical aid.
Legal support.
A memorial was established for children who had suffered through family conflicts over inheritance.
As for Lily, she became something of a legend at the Grand Regent.
Employees called her “the little investigator.”
She hated the nickname.
“I just saw the pillow,” she insisted.
I laughed every time she said it.
One evening, she sat beside Eleanor.
“Are you the lady from the picture?”
Eleanor smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why did everyone think you were dead?”
Eleanor looked at Alexander.
“Because some people were afraid of the truth.”
Lily nodded.
“That's silly.”
Everyone laughed.
May you like
It was.
But it had almost destroyed them.
