Chapter 7 - The Man Behind the Fake Name

The address belonged to a private residence hidden behind high stone walls.
Police surrounded the property before entering.
The gates opened automatically.
That disturbed Maya.
“Someone expected us.”
Alexander stepped out of the vehicle.
I followed.
The house looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
Inside, there were photographs of the Whitmore family.
Alexander as a child.
Julian.
Their parents.
Eleanor at a charity gala.
Vanessa.
And one photograph of Lily.
I stopped.
“Why is my daughter in here?”
Maya immediately photographed it.
Alexander stared at the wall.
“This was taken outside the Grand Regent.”
“Someone has been tracking the hotel.”
The investigation suddenly became personal.
Lily wasn't just an accidental witness.
Someone had been watching her.
We searched every room.
A hidden office contained financial documents.
Shell companies.
Offshore accounts.
Medical payments.
The records connected Edward Harrow to the fake pregnancy operation.
But they also revealed something worse.
Edward had been moving money out of Whitmore Holdings for years.
Millions at a time.
Some transactions had been disguised as charitable donations.
Others as acquisition fees.
Then we found the largest transfer.
Almost three hundred million dollars.
Destination:
Harrow Strategic Partners.
Maya stared.
“This is the real objective.”
Alexander shook his head.
“What?”
“Your company.”
He looked at her.
“What about the company?”
“The trust is only the leverage.”
She opened another document.
Edward had been preparing to acquire the company's most valuable divisions.
If Alexander died.
If Eleanor remained “dead.”
If the fake child inherited.
If Julian became acting trustee.
Then Edward would acquire the divisions at a fraction of their real value.
He would effectively control the Whitmore empire.
Alexander stared at the papers.
“My own family planned to destroy me.”
Maya corrected him.
“They planned to use you.”
The difference mattered.
Then I noticed a small digital recorder beneath the desk.
I picked it up.
“There.”
Maya activated it.
Edward's voice filled the room.
Julian, the pregnancy must continue until the trust is fully activated.
We cannot allow Alexander to discover Eleanor survived.
If the child is born, the shares become harder to control.
If the child dies before the trust is completed, the foundation provision activates.
Either result can be manipulated.
Vanessa's voice followed.
“What if Alexander finds out?”
Edward answered:
“Then you leave.”
Julian asked:
“And Eleanor?”
Edward's voice became cold.
“She should have died in the accident.”
Alexander's face hardened.
The recording continued.
If necessary, remove her permanently.
Maya stopped the recording.
Silence filled the room.
The evidence was overwhelming.
But before anyone could speak, a gunshot sounded from outside.
Everyone froze.
Another shot.
Then tires screamed.
“Move!” Maya shouted.
We rushed toward the front entrance.
A black vehicle sped through the gates.
One officer fired a warning shot.
The vehicle disappeared.
Maya turned toward Alexander.
“Did you see the driver?”
“No.”
I looked at the photograph of Lily again.
My stomach twisted.
Whoever had escaped knew about my daughter.
And now they knew the evidence had been found.
This was no longer just about the Whitmore family.
It was about everyone who had seen too much.
Maya turned toward me.
“Take Lily somewhere safe.”
“I work security.”
“Exactly.”
She looked at me.
“They know how you operate.”
I understood.
If they wanted to erase the evidence, they would start with the witnesses.
And Lily was the most innocent witness of all.
That night, I moved her to a secure location.
Mrs. Walsh volunteered to help.
Lily complained about leaving her favorite blanket behind.
I promised her we would bring it tomorrow.
She looked at me.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Did I do something bad?”
I hugged her.
“No.”
“Then why are people scared?”
“Because sometimes the truth scares people who don't want to hear it.”
She thought about that.
Then nodded.
“I like the truth.”
I kissed her forehead.
“So do I.”
Meanwhile, Alexander returned to the hospital.
Eleanor was awake.
He told her everything.
She looked frightened.
“Edward won't stop.”
“I know.”
“Then we need to expose him.”
“That's what we're going to do.”
Eleanor reached for his hand.
“Before he comes for you.”
May you like
Alexander looked at her.
“He already did.”
