Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The police searched Edward Harrow's records.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Too legitimate.

Corporate registration.

Passport.

Tax history.

Charitable donations.

The documents had been manufactured perfectly.

Detective Torres finally found the connection.

A private passport record from twenty years earlier contained the same fingerprint pattern.

Edward Whitmore.

Alive.

Operating under another name.

The investigation became federal.

The Whitmore family empire had been built on shell companies.

Money transfers.

Offshore trusts.

Fake identities.

And at the center was Edward.

The man everyone thought was dead.

Alexander confronted Julian.

“Why?”

Julian looked exhausted.

“He offered me the company.”

“You already had a position.”

“Not enough.”

“You tried to kill Eleanor for money?”

“I didn't know what else to do.”

“You always had a choice.”

Julian looked down.

“You were always Father's favorite.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“This wasn't about Father's favor.”

“It was about power.”

Julian began crying.

“Edward said if Eleanor disappeared, you would eventually marry Vanessa.”

“And if Vanessa produced an heir…”

“The shares would move.”

“But there was no baby.”

Julian nodded.

“So they created one.”

“Exactly.”

The fake pregnancy had been the last step.

But Edward's plan was even bigger.

He wanted Alexander dead after the trust transferred.

Then Vanessa would inherit.

Then the family foundation would be controlled by Julian.

And Edward would quietly acquire the company's most valuable divisions.

A decade-long conspiracy.

All built around one false pregnancy.

But Edward had made one mistake.

He underestimated Lily.

Her innocent observation had destroyed everything.

The investigators raided Edward's office.

They found passports.

Medical equipment.

Fake pregnancy materials.

Bank records.

And photographs of Eleanor.

Taken during her captivity.

Alexander looked at the evidence.

Then saw something else.

Photographs of Elena?

No.

Eleanor.

Vanessa.

Julian.

And a little girl.

Lily.

Alexander's face changed.

“Why is my security director's daughter in his files?”

Detective Torres looked closer.

“She's been watched.”

My heart dropped when I heard that.

“Lily?”

“They knew she would be at the gala.”

“How?”

“Because someone inside the hotel gave them the schedule.”

My stomach turned.

The investigation shifted to the Grand Regent.

Someone had been leaking information.

Someone knew which cameras covered which rooms.

Someone knew Lily was there.

And someone had intentionally allowed her to witness the fake pregnancy.

I asked:

“Why?”

Detective Torres stared at the evidence.

“Because they wanted a witness.”

I froze.

A witness who could expose Vanessa.

A child no one would expect to manipulate.

They had underestimated her because she was eight.

But someone had put her in that room deliberately.

The hotel employee records were searched.

One name appeared repeatedly.

My assistant.

A woman named Carla.

She had worked for me for six years.

I stared at the screen.

“She couldn't.”

Detective Torres looked at me.

“You know her?”

“She helped raise Lily.”

That night, Carla disappeared.

And so did the final piece of evidence.
