Chapter 6 - The Woman in Room 214

Alexander reached North Valley Care Center before midnight.
The drive from the Grand Regent seemed to take forever.
Every traffic light felt deliberately slow.
Every second reminded him that the woman everyone had told him was dead might be alive somewhere behind a hospital door.
Maya Torres arrived shortly after him.
So did two officers.
I followed because the events at the hotel had become impossible to separate from my job. More importantly, Lily's discovery had turned her into an accidental witness to something far bigger than a fake pregnancy.
The corridor outside Room 214 was quiet.
Too quiet.
Alexander stopped in front of the door.
His hand was trembling.
Maya noticed.
“You don't have to go in alone.”
Alexander nodded but didn't answer.
He opened the door.
For a moment, nobody moved.
A woman lay beneath a white blanket.
Her face was thinner than in the photographs.
There were faint scars near her left cheek and temple.
Her dark hair had been cut short.
But when she opened her eyes, Alexander knew.
“Eleanor.”
The woman's lips parted.
“Alex?”
He crossed the room.
He stopped beside the bed, unable to trust himself to speak.
Eleanor looked at him for several seconds.
Then tears ran down her face.
“I thought you were dead,” he whispered.
“So did I.”
He sat beside her.
“What happened?”
Eleanor looked toward the door.
Then toward Dr. Reed.
“I was trying to come home.”
“What stopped you?”
“They did.”
“Who?”
She took a breath.
“Your family.”
Alexander froze.
“My family?”
“Your brother.”
His face hardened.
“Julian?”
Eleanor nodded.
“He knew I survived the crash.”
“How?”
“He arranged it.”
Alexander stared.
“He tried to kill you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Eleanor looked toward Maya.
“Because of the trust.”
The same word again.
The trust.
The Whitmore Family Trust had always been spoken of as though it were a sacred institution.
But in the last few hours, Alexander had begun to understand that people had been willing to destroy lives over it.
Eleanor continued.
“Your grandfather created a protected inheritance structure.”
“For direct descendants.”
“A child could become the primary beneficiary.”
Alexander whispered:
“My child.”
“Yes.”
“That's why Vanessa pretended to be pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“And if you were dead…”
“The family could create a false heir.”
“And Julian could control the shares.”
Eleanor nodded.
Alexander covered his face.
“I should have seen this.”
“You were supposed to be confused.”
“What?”
“That was the point.”
Eleanor explained that the plan had begun years earlier.
Julian had convinced Vanessa that if Alexander believed he had a pregnant wife, he would transfer additional assets into a protected trust.
Dr. Reed would create medical records.
Cynthia would control the family legal structure.
Then Eleanor would remain hidden.
Eventually, Alexander would be manipulated into a financial position from which he could not recover.
If he died or became incapacitated, the fake child would inherit through Vanessa.
Then Julian would control the assets.
But there was one problem.
Eleanor had survived.
And she had evidence.
“Why didn't you contact me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Several times.”
“Then why didn't I receive the messages?”
Eleanor looked toward Dr. Reed.
“He intercepted them.”
Alexander turned.
“You knew?”
Dr. Reed bowed his head.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was threatened.”
“By Julian?”
The doctor hesitated.
“By more than one person.”
Alexander stepped back.
“You let me believe my wife was dead.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You failed.”
The doctor looked down.
“I know.”
Maya stepped forward.
“Eleanor, do you know where Julian is now?”
Eleanor nodded.
“He was at the villa.”
“We know.”
“He has another property.”
“Where?”
“North of Hartford.”
Maya immediately called the officers outside.
Then Eleanor whispered:
“There's something else.”
Alexander moved closer.
“What?”
“Your uncle is alive.”
Silence.
“My uncle?”
“Edward Whitmore.”
Alexander's expression changed.
“That’s impossible.”
“He was there the night of the crash.”
“My uncle died years ago.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked directly at him.
“The man you think is dead has been controlling your family from the shadows.”
Alexander sat down heavily.
Edward Whitmore had supposedly died of a heart attack almost twenty years earlier.
There had been a funeral.
A memorial.
A trust distribution.
Everything official.
But Eleanor had seen him.
Recently.
She described a man using the name Edward Harrow.
He had attended private meetings.
He had funded shell companies.
And he had been working closely with Julian.
Alexander's voice became cold.
“Where is he?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“You've already met him.”
Alexander frowned.
“Where?”
“At the foundation meeting.”
The room went silent.
The man Alexander had recently trusted to advise the family was not a stranger.
He was his supposedly dead uncle.
Maya immediately requested his records.
I stared at the floor, remembering the gala.
Edward Harrow had been there.
Watching.
Listening.
And when Lily had pointed at Vanessa, his face had been strangely calm.
Perhaps because he already knew what would happen.
Maya turned toward us.
“We have an address.”
Alexander stood.
“Let's go.”
Eleanor reached for his hand.
“Be careful.”
He squeezed her fingers.
“I've spent three years believing I lost you.”
May you like
His voice broke.
“I won't lose you again.”
